Paying a little too much right now for a cow who is going to be around producing for some years wont hurt too much. Getting in too deep on short term cattle is the one which can hurt. We know this market is going to adjust the question is when and how much. I try to go with a rule of one half. If the market drops half the value will I still get my original money back and just be out the cost of feed. I get a tax write off but still live to play another day.
 
My 14 yr old open cow, weighed 1300 lbs... at 1.48 / lb she was worth over 1900....

Heard a talk the other night by a Prof from University of MD .. studies on beef cattle prices and studies on the swings in the cattle markets/cow herd numbers and all... some comparisons went back 50 years... and the thoughts are we are starting into the "down hill slide" of prices... some heifer numbers for retention are increasing and corn prices are still down... he figures that prices will stay up, pretty good, for another 12-18 months... BUT... this border closing with Mexico has skewed it a bit and might extend it a little more...
I told my son I had thought prices would hold through this spring 2025... then start to fall off...but that was before the border to Mexico being closed due to the New World Screw Worm.... so I can agree about the prices holding pretty good for another year. I told my son that I think through spring 2026... but I am not holding my breath past that...
Look at how many of us have talked about holding heifers back as replacements... because most of us have been culling alot of marginable/cull cows.... and even with the number of older farmers retiring out... many younger ones are going bigger... if they can get the financing... and right now they can....it might "break" these young guys in the future if they are not smart.....

So, I am going to stick my neck out... and say that after spring 2026, I think things are going to start to swing back more with the typical cattle cycling we have seen.
If the NWS worm gets into the US... all bets are off....
 
Short week for sales because of the holiday. Vale ran on Wednesday but didn't have much. Only 200 head. Fat cows there topped at $1.75 and bulls topped out at $2.00. The report said 700-800 lb steers topped at $3.08. Heifers at 600-700 lb range top was $3.07.

We are a good 4 to 6 weeks away from wheat harvest. Hay is going full blast. Lots of second cutting alfalfa is already in the stack. Potatoes and onions are at least 2 months off. And what little corn that gets raised around here isn't even waist high now.

What very little wheat is grown around here has been cut a week or two ago. Hay seems never ending from Memorial Day to the first of August.

I'll have to get some pics of the corn. Most is 6 or 8 feet tall!

🤣 I really don't miss cutting hay. I did enjoy it, when things went right. But that went south real quick.
 
The cook told me we have plenty of steaks and roast but are nearly out of hamburger. Talked to my son. He is in the same boat. So I went to the sale today with hamburger on my mind. Bought a 4 year old "heiferette" weighing 975 for $1.62. She is just smallish but in decent shape. The butcher will kill her in the morning. Young enough and in good enough condition that she should make great burger.

Are you the butcher?
I have a heiferette that we are going to have ground in December. I was thrilled that I could get her in that soon. The other locker is booked out over a year still on beef.

I called them and they said August to February they are booked solid but I could get one this week or next they could fit it in. Before I even had her loaded I gave him a call. They do farm slaughter. He said you live in Durkee..... (25 miles each way for him). He asked if I wanted to drop her in the corral at his house. I agreed. He will kill her in the morning before he gets his scheduled day started. They are amazingly quick. He will have her done and hanging in the cooler before the sun get up much at all.
