Simple recessive genes - FCS

Help Support CattleToday:

it is 35 sire daughter matings. Certainly in Angus many of the highly used sires are acceptable for use on heifers so they get used in commercial heifer development programs routinely, you simply dna type 40 or so daughters of a given sire, breed them back to the sire and you should end up with 35 separate sire/daughter pregnancies. If a problem shows up then go from there, if no problems there is a 99% statistical liklihood that the sire is free of any recessive traits.

What is more expensive? The perpetuation of lethal recessives for generations and then having to go back and clean house or a pro-active solution with sires of breed wide influence?

As far as I can see- this is the list of tested sires that are known carriers so far:

Look at the "trail of dirty" to get to "all around" . . . 5 generations.

Don't forget Oneil's Renovator, Al Rosendal received word from Dr. B on Saturday that he was a carrier.

I just checked and the AAA has updated the site, you can check carrier status of your herd for CA now. I only have one, this is a wonderful day! She was going to be ground beef after weaning a calf anyway!

I have a lot of SVF Bandolier. At $1000 per straw, they probably won't test him either.

I'm not rushing to test though . . . there are still a lot of animals that I'm sure will get tested out before I need to. Just hope someone finds a way to get that Bandolier tested.

Speaking of ground beef, I bought what was labeled hamburger at the locally owned and operated IGA this past weekend and it turned out to be ground chuck. Very disappointing. Contrary to what the so-called experts on food network tell you, hamburger is way better than chuck for making hamburgers. I knew I'd been had when no grease flare ups occured during the grilling. When I saw that I told my boys "not gonna be good as usual tonight, we been took".

Bandolier's been at that price for quite a while. They had 800 units sell at the Sunny Valley dispersal that I think took almost $900 a straw with sunny valley retaining 1/3 interest somehow. must have gone to a semen supplier - I saw the genex wagon there. Seems like with that kind of investment he'd get tested.

Are your shirting me? That's 3/4 of a Million dollars. With ET and what not there is no way that semen is rare enough to command a price like that.

Disregarding rarity is it that good?? Apparently somebody thinks so.

Better use it up quick, CA is going to be treated like AM and NH. So, if they don't test, they can't register at some point down the road. If they do test and he is a carrier, it's worthless. :cowboy:

My best females are out of him and I presently run a son out of a retail product dam that's the best cleanup bull I've ever owned. EPDs are very balanced and they carry great muscle. Here's a clip where two units took $900 each at the National Western Angus Foundation Female Sale in 2008.

RD Sam - it's probably worthless either way unless they test . . . except, if someone knowingly uses a dirty bull the offspring are automatically not registerable . . . is that correct? Then, I see your point.

Ironically, Future Direction semen took $438 per unit at that same sale . . .
