Simmental vs Angus

[image][/image]Going to buy a new bull. We have about 30 red angus black angus and a few gert cows. 10 cows are registered angus. Can’t decide if we want a big Angus or a Simmental . We found 2 the Angus is 2,000 pounds and the Simmental is 1,700 at 18 months. I will post pictures and epds once I figure out how.

I would surmise that you’ll first have to decide your choice of direction, and what you want those calves to be, and how you see your herd in 5, 10 or 20 years.

Using a Simmental bull, you will be able to register the offspring - if that is the direction you want to go.

Either one would be ok depending on your goals and preferences. Just my opinion, if it were me with the cow breeds you have I would lean heavily towards an Angus. I say that based on you have some registered Angus and some red Angus cows, those cows should have fairly uniform calves and you could register the calves from the registered cows or sell them as commercial with the others. I have had a few Angus X Gerts and really like those.

You put some emphasis on big.are you looking for terminal calves? If so I'd lean toward using the Simmental for Heterosis..just because the angus weighs a ton don't necessarily mean you'll get the growth you want in the calves...

Those big cows come with a cost....been there..still got some...they look better on pasture,then they do on paper..

The Angus is the better bull ... That Simmentals got some big open shoulders. Potential hard calving ...he's pretty course..

Do you think solid mouth calves would have a hard time with the delivering the Simmentals calves ? We wouldn’t use him on heifers.

i agree that they do up to a point..but he's pretty open between the shoulders...look at the top pic, side view with his head up slightly...
