Amen to that, brother. If I was still in south AL, or TX, I'd have some ear on my cattle. And while I prefer red & spotted cows, the market here wants black, so I'm moving in that direction.

That is why I'm going all black. Can't afford to do it all at once but over the next couple of years.
 
It's gonna take me longer than 2 years. Thanks to a couple of yellow Simmental bulls I used back in the late 80s, I've got a significant number of yellow and gray cows in my herd, and even with two successive crosses of Angus, I'm still getting some gray/mousy brown calves. Several in this past spring's crop pass for Charolais crosses, they're so 'white' - but they sold for top dollar; makes me think about using a Charolais as a terminal sire.

I have 3 purchased red "English" cows throwing calves like this. If you look close they have a little more hair or ear so there probably is some Simi in the woodpile. Nice cows but the calves get docked...

Is this a dominant gene or did I just get lucky?

The 'color dilution' gene carried by Simmentals and Gelbvieh(and some other breeds) modifies the base color of red or black. I suppose you could say it's dominant - one copy gets you gray or yellow, two copies gets you even lighter gray and yellow. There are other modifiers, too - I've got cows/calves that run the gamut from light gray - almost white - to iron gray, mousy brown/gray, plain ol' brown, dark chocolate brown. Some of the remaining 'red' cows will throw 'diluted' color, even though they don't really look all that 'yellow' to me.
My buyer pays more for the light gray calves and the black baldies, but the browns typically bring about the same or a little less than the straight blacks.
