From Dairy Herd Managment:
Maine producers fight semen tax
Maine producers want the state to make livestock semen exempt from a 5-percent sales tax. Producers say the tax adds hundreds of dollars to their annual cost of doing business. Until recently, genetics companies footed the sales-tax bill. But, the companies have stopped, citing a trend in other states to tax semen. Currently, six states have a sales tax on livestock semen, including Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wyoming.
