Maine producers fight semen tax
Maine producers want the state to make livestock semen exempt from a 5-percent sales tax. Producers say the tax adds hundreds of dollars to their annual cost of doing business. Until recently, genetics companies footed the sales-tax bill. But, the companies have stopped, citing a trend in other states to tax semen. Currently, six states have a sales tax on livestock semen, including Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wyoming.

I wonder if they don't have an ag exemption tax program in Maine? A few years ago, ABS started charging sales tax on AI certificates here in OK. They said the OK Tax Commission considered AI certs as "office supplies." :?: I called our state cattlemen's group and discussed it with them. It didn't take them long to get with some rural legislators, who explained to the tax commission that there was no other use for AI certs than registering cattle. The tax went away; ABS reimbursed us for taxes we had already paid. Our state cattlemen's group is a hard working bunch that takes their job seriously.
