Should I fertilize before second cut on hay field? Soil sample taken and fertilizer applied prior to fisrt cut. Is a second soil sample and possible nutrient replacement necessary prior to second cut. Hay field is located in northern AL. Looking forward to reading your responses.

How long since the last test? Was the ground really poor? Did you apply the amount called for? I personally see no need to test more often than 6 months for grass/pasture land. I may be all wet on that, my opinion nothing else. Not really enough information.

Soil testing once per year on hay fields should be more than enough in my opinion. Of course, you should fertilize after the first cut if you think you will get some rain and you can afford the fertilizer. If you keep taking nutrients out and not replacing them you will see loss of grass (particularly clover) persistence over time. Particularly important is K and should be equal in pounds of N applied.
