I took my calves to the weekly cattle sale at Warwick on Monday for todays sale. I had 14 heifers and 13 steers. The heifers made to $2.20 cents /kg ($1.00/lb), the steers to $2.40 /kg ($1.09/lb). I did not hang around for the weights as they were a bit behind with weighing. I think the heifers will go about 260kg (572 lb) overnight curfew weight and the steers 300kg (660 lb) curfew weight which will equate to about $600 and $700 respctively.
Here are the calves yesterday when I yarded them.

I was happy with the prices, the calves brought 15-20 cents above the market. I would like your current prices here, but we are happy with what we are getting. The high Australian dollar is keeping a ceiling on the market. If it was to drop to around 90 cents, then I think our cattle prices would reach new ground.

They look good Ken. I think you may get a surprise with the weights, they look a bit heavier to me :D

I know I'm a long way from you ken but my butcher said the whole market is in trouble. These is a big pig business in Sydney killing 10000 pigs a week and they are freezing 20000 legs because they can't sell them. A wholesaler contacted him and said name your price. He said he had be careful what he buys because at the moment it's a hard sale and thats why I still have 4 prime fat heifers running around the paddock!

What will happen with them now? Export, feedlot, backgrounder?[/quote
Douglas, I think the heifers will be joined in October and sold on as PTIC (preg tested in calf)
The steers will be backgrounded for 12 months and sold to a feedlot.

nice looking cattle. Does it really take that long to finish out? Seems like a long time to take to market.
If they get up to feedlot specification earlier, usually about 450kg, then they will go. These were born July/August a couple of Sept stragglers. Around here a lot of people will buy at the autumn weaner sales and hold through the summer and then unload them ready to buy another batch of weaners.

That was great money for them Ken. And yes, I did notice that Roma was better but I wasnt going to mention that!!

Also, I wonder if our northern hemisphere friends are familiar with "Sale-O, Sale-O"? Here in Australia, at the very beginning of the days proceedings, when the auctioneer takes the stand and is ready to commence selling, he summons the buyers to attention with that call. Is that another Aussie peculiarity?
