Rough land

I had asked about this before once on here, but cannot find the post.

I have one parcel (70 acres, 1/2 is a lake) I just had fenced and it is ready for some cows. It is not open pasture but rather oaks and palmetto trees.

Want to put some black cows in there with an Angus bull.

One fella told me because of the land, put on LH's. Trouble is LH's get really docked hard at sale (the few that go through) but checking around for some private treaty good, bred, LH's and they want a fortune for them.

Think I can just get me some more black cross cows and an Angus bull and do alright? Any other breeds do well on that type land (scrub oaks and palmetto woods)?

I'm gonna ask a dumb question...but I gotta know. Are you at all worried about alligators and putting cows out there?

Well, funny you should ask. We have seen two very large gators out there. I asked my RH about this and he said, "lots of cows in Florida around our many gators. Just part of nature. Don't worry too much about it" So I guess I won't.

Also, my relative gets gator huting permits each year and might try to take the largest one (legally). It is a monster.

Yesterday the phone rang and our good friend josh asked if my wife would like to go lizard hunting... minutes later i was asked to watch our son and she was out the door.

11:30pm last night she and hunting companions laid this 11 foot gator out on the drive way.

she caught it with a snatch hook and spinnng rod.

Ok, that would do it for me. I'm not normally a scaredy cat, but those pictures made my stomach lurch. All a part of nature is one thing...providing meals for hungry gators, especially of that size, is another.

I know that you know what you are doing...you live there and I guess gators are a part of everyday life. Permit or no, I'd shoot every last gator I could find if I had cattle on that property with all of that water.

What my Brother (Ricker) forgot to mention is he used to wrestle gators at Gator Land in Orlando but lost an arm. After that fiasco he tried hanging wallpaper and when that did not work he got into the cattle biz. Ricker is also very scared of the Ocean, he won't even drive on the beach at Daytona because he saw Jaws and it had a very dramatic effect on him. With me being the older Brother and the skinnier and wise man that I am I have tried to teach and lead Ricker down the right path. How he is posting to this site from the Federal Pen is beyond me but that is for another day.

Have you boys considered raising rice on that property? I wouldn't worry about the gators getting the cows, I would worry about the cows eating the gators because there doesn't appear to be much else there for them to eat. :lol: Boone

Boone the pics I took were while I was fishing and from the boat. There is 35 acres of high and dry land on the 70 acres. The lake is part of a chain of lakes that go into others property. That is why it looks like all lake.

I will take some more pics of the land itself and post them soon.

Oh and just ignore my phsycho brother. I think he is off his meds for a while. And he is not a prtner on the 70 acres so these cows will be all mine!!!

Brangus or Brafords would do pretty good there. I've never seen a gator get a calf but have had some dogs go missing. Don't get a lab, if you do, I wouldn't waste money on a collar. :lol:

Boone I'm with you. My suggestion was going to be water buffalo, just going by the pictures. But seriously, I think brangus would work well in this environment.

22 in the right spot will work but my relatives usually use bang sticks. I do not think you are not allowed to shoot a gun across the lake when you are hunting gators. As a matter of fact if they find one in your boat while using your gator permit, your toast.

Brangus: I have a dumb question. Can I just look for Brangus looking commercial cows at my local sale barn and then get a Brangus Bull?

I am not sure I am wanting to go buy some pure breed cows.

I would think that anything with some "ear" would do well in that environment. Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, or any Brahman cross. I would definately watch my stocking rate.. with that much of the land in "water", you don't have much grazing left. I wouldn't put more than 10 or 12 to start with.

Brangus: I have a dumb question. Can I just look for Brangus looking commercial cows at my local sale barn and then get a Brangus Bull?

I am not sure I am wanting to go buy some pure breed cows.

Exactly, put a good angus bull or hereford bull on them, this will knock back the ear some so when you sell them you won't get docked to hard for the ear. You want some ear in your mommas but little ear in your calves. (Personally, I'd go with the hereford bull.) Oh, when you are picking a bull, get one with heavy hindquarters to compensate for the typical hatchet butts in the brangus types.
