Rodeo Life

Had a video (long lost now) of an indoor rodeo at the All Phase Arena.
I made a decent ride, and when the whistle blew I just threw my rein, sat back, and let my bronc shoot me into the air. I landed on my feet and as I was struttin' out, the pick-up man ran me over.
I hadn't cut my hair in months, and for a second my hat looked suspended in mid air, and my six inch red hair stood straight up like one of those little Troll Doll things.

That's funny! Too bad the video is gone...... :( It really sucks to loose irreplaceable things like that!

I lost most of my pictures in the house fire in '84. I have a few that my Mom had, but lost the best ones. If I ever figure out how to post pictures here I will see if I can get one up.

I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's pictures. My brother and I rodeoed in high school in a teenage association. We had a great time and made a lot of friends. After high school, I got busy with college and work and lost my drive to compete, but I finally graduated graduate school last month, so I hope to get back into some type of rodeo or showing. I will try to find some pictures that I can post when I get home this evening.

I "chute-dogged" and was interested in steer wrestling until I hurt my knee.

My brother rode our Paint stallion in breakaway roping, calf roping and pole bending. He was All-Around Cowboy our second year with the association. The next year he broke his elbow playing basketball and quit rodeo. He still started some colts until he went off to college.

I am short and heavy, that's for sure. That was 10 years ago, so I was stocky then.

I teach Jr. High English. I actually just finished my 4th year of teaching.

Dear diary, Day two of trying to learn how to post pictures. I think I'm going to get it this time.

Me roping at a truck roping....didn't win the truck

This is me roping a snail back in my rodeo days....

The highlight of my career was staying on this shark for 8 seconds...

Hoss, you appear to have gained a few pounds between your shark riding days and the time you took up snail roping. And with that snail roping just how do you go about getting the piggin string on them?

You see Dave when I gained a few pounds, mostly from living the good life on my shark riding winnings, it slowed me down to a snails pace. That is why I took to roping snails so well. Matter of fact I am the world grand champion snail roper. What you can't see is those tiny feet that are under the sand. That is what I tie up with the piggin string. Throwing one over is a whole nuther matter.....those things are slick.

M5, you need to tighten down those turns. You didn't knock over any of the cans which is good but if you want to win you will have to be faster.
But then what do I know. For years when the barrel racing started I figure it was time to go get something to eat at the concession stand.

A. Lane nice pictures! Glad you got the posting part figured down. :D
Thank you for sharing!

Hoss I have to agree with Dave. The weight gain is pretty significant between the two photos. Could maybe you be fooling us by using a stunt man and taking credit where credit is not due, for those fabulous feats?

I'll bite.
When I was young, my parents drug us around to a Paint or Pinto horse show every weekend. I was raised on the back of a horse! Here is a shot of an advertisement my parents ran when I was a kid. Silly, the mare I am riding/showing, I got when she was under a year, and she is buried in a pasture now, at the age of 29. We had to put her down because she broke her femur, and now call the pasture Silly's pasture.

When Silly got older (and suffered from laminitis), I showed Dunnie. I won miss PB&E Princess (Pinto Breeders and Exhibitors).

While in high school, I rode a few bulls (high school rodeo, so smaller bulls) and LOVED to bull dog off of Silly. I could flip a steer quicker than most! I did that for a few years, on into college.
Later in life, I showed Gymkhana, something special to CA. It is a day full of speed events, from barrel racing to pole bending to flags. Over life, I put on weight (at which I later lost over 100 pounds). This is me on a daughter of Silly, and she is still out in our pasture, along with two of her Paint daughters.

The last year we lived in CA, I won reserve champion in my division in gymkhana. I was pretty proud. Our speed really improved once I lost the weight!!!
Now, I just watch. I ride every now and then, but the kids do more riding. Both my girls like to rope, and go to the church arena on Mondays to practice. The oldest is trying to learn to heel. We still have 4 horses, and getting one back from CA that my niece used for a year (A Playgun granddaughter). Our mares are all in their late teens, but the Playgun granddaughter is just 7 so good age for the daughter going to college to start on.
Thanks for bringing me back down memory lane!
