Never used the cloth your talking about. I had the same question myself about the step. I was told it was to help prevent the cattle from backing up and pooping in the drinker. What ever you do make sure the outside pad is sloped so the water drains away from the unit.

The only waterer we have on a pad has about 6 inches of concrete extending out on all sides. It does seem to keep the cows from loitering around the waterer

Nice thing about a mirafount is if you can see the fountain and you see the blue balls the trough has water in it. with the ritchie you have to go over there and look to make sure.

If mine quits there's a bunch of cows standing around it.

I have an SPI cfpinz so no help, just gotta say it looks like the folks who installed mine over 8 years ago went all out on the installation and I am glad they did! Like fencing, do her right the first time.
