Rethinking 223

As a deer round the way the 62 grain hollow points takes out a hog is impressive.
It folds a 150 pound hog up at 100 yards.

With the right bullet and a good hit it will do the job. Years back a guy I knew thought it would be the cats meow. The idiot used 55 gr hollowpoints. After loosing 4-5 deer in a matter of days he went to the other extreme. Got a 300 Wthby Mag, he decided those MS deer were just too tough for a 223. Freaking idiot!

I have been using Remington Hog Hammer ammo this stuff is screaming at 3100 FPS + with an excess of
1000 foot pounds at 100 yards. Now this is premium ammo and it drops a hog as good as a 30-30.

I shoot a lot of deer with a 223, I call it my squirrel gun. Head and neck shots are all I take though. I enjoy seeing the bullet make impact.

If you have a 9 twist 223 then I think a 69 gr sierra would work pretty well. 3000fps and plenty of energy

Have 3 one is 1 in 8,9 and 10.
The one in ten loves Sierra 75 grain Match kings it is a 24 inch barrel.

Doesn't make much sense. you would think the 8 twist would excel with the heavier bullet. Who is the maker on the 10twist. don't think I have ever seen one.

3 way it is a CVA single shot I bought for the Mule, and your right it shouldn't.
Haven't found any it doesn't shoot well just some better. I don't have 3 it is four as both the AR and Mini are
1 in 9 the American is one in eight. Never shot anything with the American but paper as I just bought it the other day for the truck .
When I bought it thought well if it gets stole or tore up no big deal. It is one ugly gun.
But it works and have actually been very pleased and shocked at the accuracy of the cheap rifle.
Came across it at the local gun store when I was looking for one to leave on the Mule
24- 7 and said what the heck versus an H&R as I was tired of toting my Ruger and AR back and forth.
Couldn't bring myself to leave my good guns in the gun rack on the Mule in the shop 24 hours a day.
Bought a Ruger American to leave in the truck, dang hogs have moved back in bad with all this years rain
being flooded out of the creek bottoms.
Never see any under a 100 yards from the road or in the pasture so the 22 Mag wasn't cutting it.
I have put enough pressure on them they went nocturnal quick that Stream Light Game Spotter green light
mounted on my Vortex on the Mini has them looking for a friendlier neighborhood.
Now my neighbors can enjoy the skeeters after dark as well need a blood transfusion when you sit on a stand after dark.

Lots of deer killed with a 223 here. Generally 55gr PSP. I've shot several in the neck but usually just pull behind the shoulder like with any other caliber. Seems like 9 out of 10 kids start with a single shot 223 here in my part of MO.

Caustic I have been a very serious Savage fan for going on 15 years but the Americans I have shot and worked with have me thinkig that Savage is no longer the only (inexpensiv) game in town. Sadly Svage is not tht inexpensive any more, and the Rugers are definately shooters.

Dun brought a good point this morning for those of us that leave a gun on a UTV about protecting the barrel from
dirt daubers. Around here you have to put up anything electrical in a cabinet as they will ruin it.
Leave a set of sockets out and they will fill everyone of them.
I hadn't even thought about the little devils they could make you have a bad day for sure.

That was what I told CB. They;re called "finger cots". If it has a front sight they will tear pretty easy when you slip them on. The good part is you cna just shoot trough them, ofcourse it's no good after that. I've got a whole box of them in the glove box of each mule.

The way the good bullets like Barnes take out and punch a hole through a 150 to 200 pound hog
coming out the size of a 50 cal. Looks like it wouldn't have a problem with deer .

Never shot a deer with a 223,but I would tend to agree with you that it would do just fine with a deer.

I haven't shot many critters with the 223 but I've killed quite a few with a 22-50. Shoot them in the neck . shoot hogs,in the ear . I don't see where the 223 would be any different

.223 are very effective against 200# humans. Just ask anyone in the military. Would they really be less effective on a deer? The rifle I have used almost exclusively for deer over the last 30 years is my Savage .222 Remington. Never lost one and never had one run more than 50ft. Most have dropped where they stood.

I just got a new Savage in .223 and expect it to not be any different in any way, shape or form than my .222. Well, except for the new can hanging off the end.
