I know there is a removal knife you can use to remove ear tags but I'm not sure how they work...do they cut only the collar and slide parallel to the ear to cut the stud plastic only? Thanks!

Use a hand size wire cutter and cut the button on the back side of the ear.

That's the method we used to use until we broke down and got a buck 89 knive. It;s quicker and a whole lot easier. To answer the first question, yes you just slip it over the stud on the rear of the ear, between the button and the ear itself. Give a quick tug then pop the tag off the front, or leave it there and it will usually fall off by the time the animals is a couple of feet out of the chute. I've clipped them off in the pasture while the cows are eating cubes off the ground, no muss no fuss.
