The bottome line is that it just dont matter how big the expected numbers are if we cant afford to feed the cows or if we cantget calves on the ground..theres ALWAYS sacrifices made in other areas by focusing to much on some traits. Chasing bigger and bigger numbers is not alwasy the answer...we have to be sure that we never lose site of the efficent fertile cow

I totally agree with Frankie (you better - she's our expert on EPD's).
I did want to point out that there IS a baseline year that each breed uses for EPD's. Each breed has their own baseline year.
I'm not sure if it's still this way, but I know years ago, none of your data entered the system unless there was a "reference sire" used within the contemporary group. Don't think it's that way anymore. Used to be that you had to have at least 5 in a contempory group (same sex, same %, within an age range) now you only need 2. (in Simmental breed)

Anymore I am just glad I wake up. If my calve are weighing 650 currently at weaning and I want to try to increase that weight a mere 10 lbs , what epd should I look for Frankie ? My current bull is a +50 ww.with acc. of .45. I hope you had a Merry Christmas btw. Did you eat the fruit cake I sent you or did you think it was a relative of yours??? :lol:One thing frankie, don't forget to figure in the genetic variability (you can use an average) for bulls. I certainly dont want a bull that gets me 20 500 lb calves and 10 850 lb calves. Also figure in the predictability of getting 10 lbs bigger calves please out of my herd. Not some herd in North Dakota.

For you gusy that say epds dont work..do you have any proof that they dont or is it just your opinion??or do you just not want to change the way you select bulls?? There seems to be a lot of research and money that says they work..is there as much info that says they dont?? Its just 1 more tool to me..I need all the help I can get LOL
 
I am actually a firm beleiver they work as they are supposed to work. They are just real limited in scope and range and are (in my opinion) of secondary value when buying seedstock.
 
More pointedly you can have a hundred cows with the top epd's of any respective breed and have nearly the worst set of cows within that breed. They can have wonderful epd's yet lack functionality, predictability , and uniformity.
 
Hello ollie..I can agree with most of that. Just 1 more tool to help select..but still cull based on phenotype
