I think if it leaves a mark that is still there the next day, it was too much. With my daughter spanking was not very effective, she was so stubburn she would just turn around and give me the look of " there I survived that". The most effective way to disipline her was to put her by herself with nothing to do for about 30 minutes, everyday for a week. It seemed you had to wait for her to get over being mad, then apply some punishment. What they have to learn is that their actions have consequences, they need to learn to hate the consequences enough to cause them to govern their actions. I think they need to know after the punishment that they are forgiven. I'm no expert, just some random thoughts.

The marks that were still there the next day was a very good reminder not to ever do what you did again.
I knew somebody would say that, but I think you have to have an objective limit and to me that is it, doesn't mean I'm right, it's just what I think. That being said you can never lose control as a parent and you have to do what you have to do to keep order. I think everybody here would agree that there has to be a limit, but it sounds like where that is varies a good bit.
Curtis, what do you consider to be too much?
