Rat tail cow

Help Support CattleToday:

I have a few rat tails popping up in my herd as well. Does anyone have a definite price comparison between a rat tail and a non-rat tail? Like how much less would it sell for?

Most of our rat-tails have been char x angus calves. The price difference I see here in Va is anywhere from $.20 to $.50 per pound. Usually in the 30-40 range. Bred females will not be discounted as much as younger ones if there are some people buying breds, but the feeders will be pretty consistant. Steers seem to not be hurt as much here but I seldom see rat-tails in males, mostly always in females that I recall.

One of our favorite cows is a rat tailed Char mutt. She raise a whopper steer every year so she stays. She passed it on to her first two calves but the last three have all had tails.

Yeah she's not a rattail, she's a yellow. You can spot a rattail from a mile away.

I'll have to get a picture of her tail. It's short and doesn't have any switch.

She may have a short tail with no switch, but she's not a rat-tail - RTs must be black-factor cattle. A red or yellow cannot be one.
