Does any one ever think of whhat the population of the US would be if it hadn't been for the uncivil war?
http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm
How many potentially great men (and the contributions of their offspring) and inventions were lost?
Just some thought that shoot through my mind in the middle of the night

What gets me is the lack of proper medical care. I read a forensic report on Lincolns death and it basically said he died from the inept actions of the doctor who was in the theatre. That Lincoln wasnt mortaly wounded by the round and similar injuries were routinely successfuly treated in the era.

That was an interesting article there Dun.Real sad to think that many lives were lost fighting one another on our own soil.Sons against Fathers, brothers against Brothers.

Civil wars...horrible, horrible occurances. And the hate generated by them carries on forever, passed down from generation to generation.

When I used to have to go to the DC area every couple of weeks I would alwasy schedule an extra day so I could go and visit the battlefields. Tore my heart out then, thinking about it today has the same affect.

There's a whole lot that happened right in this neck of the woods.I hope all of us in this Country today, can just unite together, cause we're all we have in this big bad world.

Despite the tragic loss of Human life, the horse and mule casualties far out numbered man. The numbers are staggering!

Some of the Historical parks are incredible as to the history and monuments they hold.

I read the other threads on this board about the civl war with great interest. I stayed out of it, thoughy both sides had good points and both smetimes were just childish. I could not understand why folks in the south can't let it go. Then one day Flaboy posted something that hit me like a ton of bricks. I don't remember the exact words, but he talked about the raping of the women and the burning of the south. I'm sure that it happened to a lesser degree in the north. Then I understood. Thought if it was my home? War is Heck! Lets try not to open the wounds again.

you should come on down to the McDowell Battlefield, it's nothing fancy though, just a small dirt path that goes back through the woods...it hasn't been messed with any...other than the path that was made, it's the exact same way it was all those years ago...about every other year we have a reenactment, gets a lot of emotions going for most of the people that watch it

More "Americans" died in the War for Southern Independance aka War of Northern Aggression than any other war. The human toll from all nations in WWII is mind boggling.

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like had the South won their independence. The idea of states rights comes to mind rather than having a big powerful central government controlling the states with its financial incentives and grants. Maybe we wouldn't go to war as often. Just a thought.

Don't like to wonder "If". If you changed history it might not be a better world. We still have a decent country. Folks dieing every day trying to come here.

Has the federal government finally cracked down on the illegal immigrants coming in from Mexico or have they let Texas handle it themselves? I was unaware of so many people dying crossing our borders.

Yes I have, actually. States still wouldn't have any rights there would just be 2 central governments controlling 2 seperate 'countries'. One would need a passport to visit friends and relatives in the other 'country', and day to day commerce would be a nightmare because of the import/export tariffs, taxes, quotas, etc. And we would probably go to war more often, because there would be two seperate ideologies to influence the mix and determine what should be done about it - the scariest thing to me is that, if the South had won their independance, there is a very real possibility that we would be going to war against each other - again. I believe that Lincoln was right - a country divided against itself cannot stand.

Google it. There a few groups - I don't remember the name of them - that have taken things into their own hands and actively search for illegals and kill them. The accounts of this happening that I've read state this is happening mostly in Arizona.
