I tried to get a calf to nurse a downed cow once. She had prolapsed and I wanted to get the colostrum in the calf any way possible.
Didn't work! Not natural for a newborn I reckon.
Again. LOVE THAT! How kool that u got a pic!
Pasture looks nice too
Shot a doe a few years back , her half grown fawn ran up and nursed her lying dead on the ground . One reason I rarely shoot does unless we are totally out of meat .
Have seen a couple times. Usually with abit older calves. Moms need rest too!
One of my pics. Remember that got the same shot of one calf two years ago too.
I'll see it occasionally with a cow that just too dang tired to get up or she was already sleeping & her calf spied DINNER just sticking out there. That said, we had a down cow probably 10 years ago and that's how she nursed her calf. We didn't dare attempt nursing when she was in the hip lift, but once we let her back down she'd roll to her side and her calf would go at it.
