Absentee landowner is running four pair to the acre. What could go wrong? In the last week I've spent more time on his place than he has in a month since everyone seems to think its my cows on the highway and call me. Last call interrupted my beauty sleep. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind helping a neighbor anytime but I think sometimes people need to be more responsible and use some common sense. Its been the same every year since he's gotten in the cattle business.

I can sympathize with you, as soon as I read the first line of your post, I knew where it was going. Over the years we have inherited some messes with neighboring properties as well.

Your just enabling him. Leave the cows where they are and the inevitable lawsuits will sort it out in time.

Oh heck no!!!!!!!!! A good Samaritan comes along, opens your gates, and puts his cows in with yours. Now you got to sort hundreds. It has happened to me more than once. I had to put locks on the gates.

The sheriff in my county has been instructed to push cattle on the road into what ever pasture they will go in. They may be a half mile from where they belong but they still get pushed into my pasture. Don't seem right but what else can they do. I've got a cow/calf in my pasture right now that don't belong to me and I really don't want the scruffy pair but if I can't find the owner they are going to the sale barn.

It cost me a 20 acre patch of wheat once. The wheat wasn't far enough along to graze. People opened gates and pushed a neighbor's cows onto it.

At least I didn't have to sort that time. Mine were in other pastures.

I agree about enabling him but I'm kindof stuck between a rock and a hard place because if I don't go check to see if they are mine then they very well could be. And when I see they are his I can't just leave them out and risk getting someone injured on the highway. Also, I would want him to do the same for me if mine get out because that, I think, is the neighborly thing to do but his irresponsibility is pushing all these limits so I'm left just biting my tongue.

Jogee I can appreciate your attitude. My cows have gotten out. Water trucks have hit fences. Oilfield contractors have turned around at the road and taken out the fences. Family have left gates open. No matter how good your fences are, things can happen. I truly appreciate people who have looked out for me thru the years and I try to do the same in kind.

No matter what else, get your beauty sleep. You need it.
(not that I have any room to talk--I'm speaking from personal experience this time)

Joe, have you suggested to him to join CT?

What, and eliminate my last vestige of places to rant without risk of incarceration which would surely mean I'd be forced to start kicking the cat. Besides, you really don't want to hear more of that "organic", "free-range", "sustainable", "humanely raised","gluten free", "nitrate-free" nonsense do you? Cause that's how he rolls. Of course he might teach us a thing or two about raising cattle right.

I do at that. Shoot, as a kid I was beat so hard with the ugly stick my nose bled and my azz was pitch black but momma still said I was a handsome devil so I at least got that going for me.

Rant on Jogee. Keep it coming. Leave him be.

We don't need any more grass fed discussion. Can't believe someone would feed grass to cows. What are they thinking?

But you told me you were so ugly as a kid that they had to tie a pork chop around your neck to get the dog to play with

Well that might explain why my dad always said my dog was smarter than my momma.

Help me understand the 4 pair per acre. Isn't that way to many? I run mine at one cow per 5 acres. I may not be understanding what I am reading.

I'm taking it to mean that the neighbor is pushing his grazing capacity to the limit by putting 4 mommas w/babies, per acre, on the land and thus not enough grazing/forage resulting in the neighbor's animals finding ways to escape and search out food.

That's exactly what's happening but I may have found a solution. I had someone call me wanting to buy some cattle and since I don't like to sell private treaty I suggested they talk to my neighbor and it seems they worked out a deal and everyone is happy.
