Pumpkin Season

Help Support CattleToday:

One year I got several tons of them for free the day after Halloween. Cows loved them. The next spring I had pumpkin plants pop up all over the pasture.

Yep, lol! They are easy to spot and pull up early in spring. I toss the pumpkins in the air so they smash in one spot, or I use a tub. The cows usually get almost all of the seeds anyway. When we carve the pumpkins, We put the innards in the tub for the cows. No seeds get loose that way.

When hubby & I managed another farm, we had truck loads of acorn squash delivered. Would use a skid steer to mush & scoop up & feed to feedlot cattle. They would fight over it. We had lots of volunteer squash plants along the edges of concrete pad.

Been feeding left over pumpkins and winter squash to animals for years. Kept them under a good blanket of hay and would take a couple out a day for the hogs and chickens. sure some would rot, but most would keep for a couple of months. Had to watch the real rinds so the cattle didn't get a piece and choke.
Great source of vitamins, beta carotene and they helped with the boredom in the chickens especially. Knew a couple of farmers that grew them for sale and could go out there after the season an pick what I wanted. Brought home pickup loads.

Oh dear.

George Washington Carver developed over 100 varieties of sweet potatoes and one was a forage potato that yielded large volume of potatoes to the acre and his plan for it was to feed cattle and hogs . Similar to Germans feeding rutabagas.

I made a video for my non-farmer family and...lol!
