Poor feeder design

This is the second calve that's gotten their head stuck in the lower portion of these tarter 2 piece feeders. No more: I'm switching these out with some that I feed the cows with.


Free at last! Took some oil and pushing, but I was able to avoid the hacksaw.

Usually I find the whole calf in them. This is worse. Need fully skirted bottoms.

I was putting dividers in a feeder, and then I stopped and looked and thought "Hmm, that's just wide enough for a calf head to get stuck in it".. so I went to get another bar, and came back to this... guess I was rigtht! (She's now my oldest cow and will be 14 years old in the spring)

Really like those two piece feeders. The bottom bar spacing is the down fall. The solid skirt is worthless. The welds break and them there is nothing on the bottom. Cut every other bar off and your good to go.

I like the ones with 4 rings around bottom they are heavy and high. Bottom one rots off still good to go just a little shorter.

Don't weaken it….although that would maybe be faster and easier, add a piece of cattle panel or as nesi suggested, another bar.

We have several hay rings in that design and I've never had a cow or calf get stuck like that. Calves climb in occasionally.

Ours get all the way in , then get their fat butts hung, on the way out. Feeder turned over, calf pinned, had to cut 2 out the last 2 yrs. Gone to plastic, at least easier to cut with a hackxaw.
