Hello all.....I have an unidentified calf...no idea what breed she (yes heifer) is...she came from OK last week...she's now about 4 weeks old and being bottle fed. What do you think?????? What breed and what quality on a rating of 1 to 5? Don't worry about insulting me....she's either going to be dinner or a pet, or maybe even a pet until she's dinner!! :roll: (Just curious) Actually, we are considering breeding her and making the babies dinner so it probably won't make much difference as long as they are good enough quality to eat (just for our own personal use, not to sell)! She will probably be our only cow unless she produces some cute little painted babies, then I may have trouble parting with them! ;-) Thanks in advance for your input. Hopeful Beginnings

Angus and Jersey??

Don't you all think that hind quarter's too nice for a half-dairy calf? I was thinking straight beef-bred.
 
My 2 cents. I don't see any dairy. for sure no Jersey. Maybe 1/8 dairy. Maybe 1/2 to 3/4 Angus, the rest who knows, could be most anything. She could be a real good stock cow. :)

I've seen Angus/Jersey heifers that look just like that.

There's a good chance she's a free martin since she ended up in the sale barn.
 
I see a lot of dairy in that calf. Look at the neck and the legs. I think it has both jersey and holstein in it, and limo.

It appears to me that she carries a lot of Dairy breeding - Jersey is what I am thinking at the moment. Possibly crossed with an Angus. Or - on the other hand - she may have some Braunvieh or Murray Grey breeding in her background. In any case, the fact that you relate to her as a "pet" entity and, at least for the time being, not as a "business" proposition, it is not a critical situation - breed-wise. But "Meat" wise - this animal will not be a satisfactory choice for your dinner table - taste-wise, economy-wise, emotionally-wise.

But this is not answering your original question, is it? Other than what I have suggested above - I don't have a clue - other than to say she is NOT a Beef-type calf.

I agree with DOC. Looks like lots of dairy in there to me. Maybe Brown Swiss crossed with Angus or whatever the black hided breed of the day is.

I have NONE!! Hubby brought her home half way across country as a gift for me. He was told she was Angus (or possibly Brangus, sometimes he mis-hears things and there has been more than one time that he had a name of a street or person wrong). She came from a beef farmer that had bought her and her mom at auction. She does look like some Brangus X Gelbvieh and Angus X Gelbvieh crosses that I found in some of the photo files...she also looks like another picture I saw in the photo files but I have not PM'd the poster to see what kind his/hers is.

Thank you so much for all the input...it is very interesting and actually kinda funny...although, I may never know what kind she is! :lol:

So....is general concensous yes or no on meat babies bred out of a meat bull?
 
I can see the angus, possibily lim...some dairy and I'm not anyone to make a guess. The long legs make me wonder what's in the wood pile.
Came from OK....did northern AZ run out of cows and have to import?

I sent hubby 3000 miles (1500 each way) to pick up the new Kaboda tractor I bought him on ebay and he seemed to think he needed to bring me home something!! Not actaully what I had my sights set on..... :roll:

Okay...I think all you dairy votes may have been right...after talking to hubby AGAIN he now tells me that it wasn't a beef farmer but a dairy farmer...I really wish he'd get his stories straight and tell me the truth!! :x

Question for you????? Do they meat out dairy cows? If I were to breed her with a beef breed would the babies be okay for beef use (for our own use, not for sale). Thanks...
 
Nothin wronf with dairy beef, jsut that dairy cattle are typically not has heavily muscled as beef cattle. Corssed back to a beef bull and you would have some good servicable beef. Or eat her and you would still have good beef. Is this the heifer tha was scouring it's brains out a while back?

I was raised on a dairy. My daddy owned and milked holsteins exclusively. From time to time he would keep and raise one of the bull calves for our freezer. It was always really good meat. Also, a man that bought the calves I raised to send to his feedlot bought nothing but holsteins, so apparently there is becoming a market for holstein beef. So to answer you question, I would have to say "yes," dairy cattle can be and are used for beef.

I don't know that I'd say it that way, but yes, I was asking about her on the newbies board and she was scouring. We ended up going with 5cc straight pennicillian orally and I ended up using pediolyte for electrolytes...milkmaid was advising me on specifics, but of course, none could be found around here!! She is doing MUCH better now and has firmed up....she never did stop feeding, always has been perky and active.
 
If my wife sent me 1500 miles to get my own gift, it had better be a Deere. Oh yea, I,d bring her home a beef. Its called a ham burger. :heart: :heart: :lol: :lol:

Hi, your calf looks exactly like our calf. Her sire is a purebreed registered black angus, her dam is a holstein. I will try to get some pictures of her and send them, if I can.I am Merry. There are 2 of here at this address. Gary is the other one, his grandfather used to be farmer and an avatar. He liked to cross a Guersey cow with a beef bull to get the best beef. The meat markets around the area liked his beef. Bye Merry
