Picking Next Steer

The second steer looks to have more natural width, muscling as well as capacity. Other things to consider how they move, should be nice and smooth, track well, toes point in the right direction and all his joints should move freely, any joint type issue will only be magnified as they pack on the weight. From there you want a good angle to his shoulder, a straight top line and a good hip, and above all balance in his appearance. Hard to find one that is perfect but you want their assets to out weigh their detractors.

The sooner you get him on feed the better; they will stouten up and have that look you want in the ring, the longer their not on feed the rangier they seem to look at the end.

When selecting calves we always start at the ground and work our way up, if they do not move right, there is no need to go any further with them. You want that calf that catches your eye over and over as you evaluate them, just as long as he has the right part and moves well in a closer evaluation.

We see it at sales a calf has a huge rear end (and that is about it) and kids will get stuck on it for that one attribute without looking closer for issues.

Both calves look they have room to grow so whatever she does decide on I hope she has fun and does well.

Aaron that is a steer. I do not know his number. Have a couple more good prospects out there. #424 comes in a very close second, but he has really long legs and the bones between the knee and ankle are long too so he would take longer to finish out.

VCC took the herd a couple of grass bales yesterday. We are going to wean the first of October. Found it is easier to wean if we start putting out hay around a month or so before weaning. The calves get on feed quicker.
He moves really well. Will try to get a video of him walking.

A friends son wants to raise a steer too. Told him if he wants to come look at ours he gets first pick after our daughter. Sounds like he is going to take us up on that. Told him to get one of our Herefords first to cut his teeth on so to speak and if he wants to go to another breeder later that was fine. He really liked our daughters steers and how calm they were.

I agree with Aaron. I like the steer in the background. He looks long and better balanced, although it can be difficult to judge an animal with it's head down.

+1 I like that redneck calf a lot. Tremendous length on his hip. Would like to see a front view to judge width though.

of the 2 steers you got pics of id watch both of them and decide after weaning.the 2nd steer looks tobe the best of the 2.

I agree too! Get some pics of him and repost if you can. He looks like he could be real competitive!

That may be him facing the camera at the top of the last picture. If so he is wiiiide.

Will have to get more pictures after we get home from the hospital. Will take pictures of as many of the steers as I can and maybe we will find this other steer.

In my eyes, #431 looks pretty nice and thick to me.. He seems to have the most 'presence' of them. The last one in the first set looks like he could have simmi influence (for better or for worse). 42? doesn't look bad, The red tagged one following him doesn't look like much, The bawling guy, well, better than the one before, The next red tagged one ending in 0 looks like he has a nice straight back and would doll up nicely. The guy nursing I can't tell much about, the next two I don't have much that strikes my eye either way.

But what do I know, I don't show
