Tried for the first time to post a photo today. I waited a year because I knew I would mess it up.

Yep. Got to uploading the picture and got back " extension bmp not allowed. " Anybody have any idea what that means ? Actually I just want to get past that I don't really care what it means.

It means you are trying to post a bmp (bitmap) type of picture. I think all that are allowed are gif (Graphic Interchange Format" or jpg/jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group). They are standards for picture composition/compression/definition.
You may be able to open the picture on your computer using the standard & available graphics software, mspaint, paintbruch, and I think there are a couple of others, and do a save as to jpg or gif. If you do that, unless the physical size or resolution is too high you should be able to post it with no problems
