we have 1 jersey nurse cow and we had a halter on her.well yesterday i thought we better take a look at it and the bottom part of the halter where the chain is had grown into her skin about an inch deep.it had only been on her for about a month.i got the halter off and she then had a deep, nasty, open wound.i rinsed it with clean, fresh water and sprayed it good with iodine.today i repeated the process.it looks to be healing and i did not see any infection.is this right or should i b doing anything else? i kept her and her calves up in a smaller pen so i can continue to monitor and treat her.i also fly sprayed her real good today, and her calves.

sounds like your doing right...the biggest fight you have are the flies
Yup, I agree. Only other thing I could suggest if the flies are really gettin in there is a product I really like and that is a povidine salve, will keep the flies out while helping with the healing.

I've had that happen before. Fly spray her and then just leave it be... it'll heal inside of a week, two at most.
