Not so good neighbors.

We had a similar situation (as TrueGrit). Our neighbor went to prison, and eventually needed money for a parole hearing. Given the opportunity, we jumped at the chance to buy her 2’ish acres. Happily paid too much for it - hard to put a price on peace of mind.

I have great neighbors to the East and Southeast. I spent three days this week helping them with their brandings. Makes them better neighbors because they know I am willing to help them. The other neighbors are mountain lions and rattlesnakes I am not nearly as fond of them. I just got to thinking. The other 2 1/2 sides of my property border BLM land. The federal government....... they have the potential to be the worse neighbors possible.

I know that's right..tho so far, USFS has been leavin me alone for the most part, but I know that can change at the drop of a matchstick..

You need to make them an offer they can’t refuse.

I thought 3 times what the property is actually worth was a stupid offer and they refused. They all know I want their property, and have the cash on hand to buy it. We have time on our side, and when one dies I'll get it for what it's worth and probably less, it's only a matter of time. The only question I have, is who's going to kill who first.

I’ve got the same issue with a set of neighbors. It funny how the worse off people are the less likely they are to sell. I finally got through to them last summer but I know it’s just a matter of time.

This is a free range area. A couple of my neighbors think the best grass is that which grows on the road right of way. It does cause everyone to slow down. The other day I was headed to town. The neighbors gate was open and cows were lined up marching out. He was a 100 yards down the road working on his fence. I stop and told him the gate was open. he repied, "I know." I said the cows are getting out. He replied, "not all of them." He does have a small pack of Border Collies that were all with him. I guess it gives the dogs a little exercise and tune up time putting the cows back in.

I feel TG's angst. I've leased/lived in places over the last 40 years with dead beat, drug producing/dealing neighbors as well as public trespassers/poachers and its both a PITA and frightening. On the up side, moved out of state a few years ago. Private dead end road. Handful of neighbors & those in the immediate vicinity are above reproach and cherished.Thinking it was my time for some good Karma. ;-)

I've mentioned more than a few times about moving out y'alls way, but the boss won't have any part of it. In all my travels throughout this country the east side of the northwest US and the west side of the northeast US is by far my favorite places. But being southern born and bred, I'm not sure about being able to handle the possibility of 6 months of winter weather.

That majority lives in Portland, Salem, or Eugene. Get away from those areas and it is pretty darn conservative. We do get some laws put on us by those people. Some get followed.... some get ignored.

Bought the closest two neighbors out over the last 10 years. Closest now is across the fence at one of our places and 15 miles by road to his house. His leaving gates open and letting 30 to 50 horses into our hay meadows was cured with locking the gates followed by purchasing the best electric fencer money will buy and energizing the whole fence. We tried being nice but some folks just don't understand that those treatments are to go both ways. He is of Native and French decent, is a druggie and drunk and seems to enjoy fighting with everyone. Time will take care of the problem someday.
