We have an adult steer and just brought home to weanling heifers. They weigh about 350 each.
Here is my concern. We have a very large pasture (12 acres) and we turned them out with our other cow. They wander off where we can't find them, generally as far away from the barn as they can get, and the water stock tank is near the barn. My concern is that they will not find the watering stock tank. My husband assures me that their nose will lead them to it. Is he correct or should I be concerned?

I feel better already. I'm hopeful that they will eventually buddy up with our steer. He's extremely gentle and loves everyone and everything. Many thanks for your quick response. :tiphat:

You must not have read many old westerns about cattle drives where the thirsty cattle would smell the water from miles away and would result in stampedes and the young cowboy"s horse would fall and trample him beyound reconition, and the cattle would fall off the steep banks being trampled by other cattle resulting in hundreds of cattle dieing. A couple of calves in 12 acres , no problem, no worry, and I'm having to look at that politicians face as I write this.

My money is on the cow instead of the steer. I have a couple of very gentle momma cows I use as babysitters and the youngsters will learn from them. Has worked well for me.
