Here's pics of our new pond, built in August, filling nicely.

This is what it looked like before the bulldozers.

This was a pinisula (sp?) of woods. In the pics of the pond, the trees on the far bank and the far right, were the edges of the pinisula of woods. It's about 2.5 acres. We plan on putting Small Mouth Bass in it.

Everything looks real good. Nice cows and stock tank if you ask me.

What in the heck is that green stuff on the ground?

;-)

The pic of the cowherd was taken in July prior to the bulldozing. We seeded all around the pond (huge area was excavated due to finding a place to put all that dirt!) Thought all the seeding got burned up in our not-so-normal hot dry summer, but fall rains have brought it back. We're really excited about it.
Two drain tiles that used to drain into the pinisula (which had a swampy creek down the middle) have now opened up again so they are helping fill the pond.

We are in desprate need of water around here. Some if you have money and water right now would be a good time to pick up some cheap cattle. Alot of people are taking them to the sale barn due to lack of water. Who are you gues doing on water? Thanks Kaneranch

why small mouth??
Pound for pound a smallie is one hell of a fighter. We catch them up in Canada. I'm sure Bez' will tell you to throw'm back or to the shore, most Canadians don't care for them.

jeanne....,
Nice cows and a beautiful pond. I hope your home is nearby for view ambiance. You will enjoy it many years. We built a 2 1/2 half acre pond 2 years ago on the side of the house. We have enjoyed it much. Don't allow the cows in it...in short order they will ruin it.

We water from ours at certain times of the year with a drain line below the location to waterers located down the valley about 500 feet. In the winter we allow it to drain continuosly and it eliminates the drinking water freezing problems. We installed drain receivers to carry the overflow water away to avoid the mud and freezing dangers to the animals.

Sadly, the pond is on the backside of our farm. We gave my in-laws 2 acres on the road on the back of our farm. This area is about 100 yards behind their lot. They always had a "swimming pond" at their other home, so they will get to enjoy it more than us.
We have a canoe & go bass fishing whenever we can get away. We already have a 1/4 acre channel catfish pond (which are around 7-8# now - real nice fight!)
Large mouth bass multiply so quickly, they don't get real big in ponds out here, but smallies are slower reproducing and are GREAT fighters. We will put crawdads & fathead minnows in it in the spring, than introduce the smallies in the late summer/fall. That way the food supply should really multiply before the bass get there.

Yes, Dun, that's exactly what I'm talking about. If you put sunfish in the pond for food, you have to harvest a huge % each year. That's why we're going with fathead minnows & crawdads.
Also, we DO NOT plan on letting cattle get to the pond, it WILL be fenced out of their territory. May work on a cyphon system to water them though.

Also, for anyone with a pond, here's a GREAT pond site:

We have placed large tractor tires (two in a group) and piles of rocks around the bottom before any water was in it. Had a ball working on "structure" for the fish. Also, stacked concrete blocks in a "castle" for minnows, high enough it should be visible from the surface. Took bunch of pics, so we'll know where everything is located.

You needds to eat more fish! We tried fathead minnows, the bass cleaned out the pond in about a week. Now we have one pond that's nothing but fatheads and bullfrogs. Peridically we net out a bunch of minnows and dump them into the other ponds.
I got a good handout from NRCS about using a syphon system for providing water to a freezeproof waterer. Might want to check with them.

When we built our little pond, the fisherie recommended putting fatheads in with the channel catfish. Well, we had "millions" of fatheads the next two years. Ken kept saying he thought the fatheads were eating the channels :D
Well, the third year - 0 fatheads. turns out channels don't eat minnows until they are 3 years old.
Fisherie recommended putting 100# minnows in pond in spring. Said there would be close to 1000# by fall, then put the smallies in.
Did you know they recommend putting lime &/or fertilizer right into the water???

Fish Pond fertilizer is getting a pretty good following as far as sales go.

That's another one of those regional things. Around here if you do it you get horrible algae blooms during the summer and it kills the fish. Tried it once, never will do that again.
