Holy cow.... that is a sad state of affairs. Lord help us. If it isn't on a hand held device, they can't figure it????!!!!!
I have never in my life seen anything like that. No wonder so many parents are going to homeschooling.
 
The New Math focuses more on conceptual understanding of mathematics over rote memorization of arithmetic. Set theory took a central role, forcing students to think of numbers as sets of objects rather than abstract symbols to be manipulated.

I tried to help my grandson, who doesn't care for school anyway, do second grade math. I gave up. I am not a fan of common core math.
 
The people that come up with this crap are the same one's that pay for everything using credit cards. Having to Add and subtract like this it's no wonder that kids can't count money.

Yesterday I watched cashiers at rural king spend 10 minutes trying to decide what 20% off of $120 was. Several of the younger ones had their phones out and still couldn’t figure it out.

One of the older cashiers was hollering I did it the old way on paper it’s $40 lol

I called my wife on the way home and told her we were screwed when people can’t figure out what 20% of $120 is in their head
 
I suspect that what you were taught in earlier years has to do with the way you understand math. Fractions were taught and how to add, multiply, divide and subtract were taught. When I went into the workforce as a draftsman we were using decimal equivalents which was totally foreign to me. But I caught on quick. Also if we were only exposed to metric measurement we would be able to use it very well. Now I can remember very well back in school which was a long time ago there were some children that could not learn the fundamental aspects of the old math. Now I will sum up my thoughts what ever we are exposed to before we knew anything will be what we understand. Now on figuring what 20 percent of $120 would be to get there I would divide 120 by 5 and get $24.

Both can be accomplished. When I taught special ed, my kids were in the 8th grade, functioning at about a 2nd grade math level. I got them to memorize at least their 8's multiplication tables. Not only did I did it through a massive rote memorization campaign, but we also went over the concept that 8x4 is 4 groups of 8 added together, but that we were doing it quickly.

Common core is trash. If I said my true feelings about it I would have to take a break from the board.
 
My husband actually went in one morning to school and told his sons math teacher that if she was going to assign homework to his kid, she better be available after school to tutor him every day or he didn't want to see it brought home.

Never saw homework in math again.
 
Oh my... So glad that everything was taught the old way when I was in school. It wasn't that long time ago though. Hopefully the system won't change for my brother too.

It's not really about Math. It's the Dumbing down of America perpetrated by the Politicians. Follow the trail to the Dept of Education! They would forfeit the minds of millions of our kids to keep the troughs full of dumb voters, thereby guaranteeing the positions they hold.
