The hardest part for me was actually getting a quote. Can’t count how many outfits talked a great game and promised to get back to me right away with prices and never got back to me. I won’t chase someone, seems like if they want the work they wouldn’t disappear.

I hear you. This is the same guy who built my house. I know what I’m getting with him. May not be the cheapest but he does great work and is open to my input on some of the specifics. Good guy to work with.

Nice looking pad. 42'x80' will be a good size. We recently built a 50'x75' barn with a few horse stalls, animal pens, and some feed storage. We really like the size.
 
It is an eye opener to me how you people build your sheds/barns, timber/lumber is the major building material. In Australia 99% of new sheds would be 100% made of steel, construction is much quicker and cheaper here. I do like your sheds the timber gives them nice aesthetics and more character. When I get some more projects completed I might look to milling some timber for a small shed or barn for the cows.

I run into that a lot. I don’t hound and beg people to do the work.
 
Woohoo, congrats! Our Christmas present to each other this year is a 30x40 building across the driveway from the house (that will aesthetically blend with the house) and I'm positively giddy. A new 42x80 at the barn would put me over the moon, especially since our barn was built in the 1930's.

But yeah, totally understand how frustrating it is when contractors don't show, drag their heels, etc.
 
It'll be nice when it's done. All I have is a 3 sided lean too with my working facilities in it and a couple of pens for sick cows as needed. But I also don't have plans of calving in the cold and snow again. Haha
 
Neighbor of ours did all the paperwork with a contractor, the guy said he needed $10,000 up front, when the guy paid him. He skipped town, then found out the guy had done the same thing to several people. That was 2-3 years ago and the guy still doesn't have a new barn.
 
Contractors are terrible to deal with. A few months before we had the barn built we built a shop and a carport. We had to stay on the contractor constantly about his work and he wanted money every other day it seemed. Finally just settled up as good enough. The contractors that built the barn were great though. I couldn't fault their work at all and they never ask for a draw. Sure makes life easier when people do what they say they'll do.
 
I built a 36x40 pole building shop in 2019 and a 40x80 barn last year. Ordered them both as kits. Between my dad, myself and uncle we did 90% of the work but I would think a builder would take on one of these kits fairly easily. They came with dummy proof binder of instructions with pictures, and permit ready engineered stamped plans, which probably doesn't matter for a lot of you depending on location but in my county every pole building has to have engineered stamped plans to get a permit (separate topic...). Anyways, the outfit i got the kits from were great to work with, get all the material shipped to my place at much cheaper than i could have sourced everything locally. Great customer service, I would highly recommend. HansenPoleBuildings.com out of South Dakota I think. I am in no way affiliated. I think they even have recommended builders they work with for a lot of areas if anyone is looking.

Never and I mean never pay anything up front. If they are good and reputable they have accounts at building material places and you can give them a draw as you see fit
