Well I did but it was not too bad

Yesterday I noticed the little ol' Massey Ferg had a diesel leak around it's sediment bowl so I turned the fuel tap off thinking that I would check it out today. Anyway, today arrives and we have to mill some lucerne in a hurry so I don't get to check the leak. Start the tractor and just as I engage PTO the tractor runs out of diesel...forgot to open the tap :frowns:

Bled the tractor, tried to start...nothing. Bled it again...and again, but still wouldn't start. By this time all the cranking had basically run the battery down so I pulled the other tractor alongside the Massey and connected the jump cables and tried again...nothing but I did notice a little smoke coming from the solenoid. Left the tractor running/charging for about 30 min and cranked Massey again. Just saw sparks coming from solenoid and then flames. The diesel that was leaking from the sediment bowl had caught alight and was spreading quickly. Dived off the tractor and luckily had a can of water right there and quickly doused the flames before they damaged anything

The battery cable on the solenoid had completely melted off so cleaned everything up and replaced the lug. Got another battery and coupled it up directly on Massey. Cranked and it started.

Silly little bugger  . It was hot as H working out there so I'll blame it partly on that :P

Unless there is puddled fuel that is burning, water works pretty well... best is a fine mist.

I have some old stainless water filled fire extinguishers that I put sprayer nozzles on when I do controlled grass burning, they work excellent and can put out a lot of fire.. the misted water really absorbs heat more effectively than a big jet.

Glad it worked out. BTW it's not alight its afar ;-)

That is why I keep a fire extinguisher mounted on the tractor.

BYW alight is what you use to see when it is dark out. And afar is a long ways off.
Here you would have nearly burned the tractor up.

So you don't light fires in your language? Makes perfect since in British English.
I thought this was going to be about birds nests. It's that time of year, though so far they've left my tractor alone.
dang autocorrect. "Perfect sense"

Alight, afar...a fire  . Thanks folks, a new day has dawned here...let's see what I can get up to today :P
