My ostriches...yeah...I know this is cattletoday...sorry

Help Support CattleToday:

I have been in N.C. a little over three years now.
Untill two years ago, the farm grazing was rented out and the hay fields where the lagoon water is disposed of,were cut and baled by local farmers who were given the hay at no futher cost. At present the company runs 82 Angus cows and 64 Hereford cows, all with calves for this season. The expansion of the cattle enterprise is the new company focal point, so the herd will be expanded, and a more focused breeding programme instituted companywide.

How many acres is on the company?

Have a good day Andy

I have 375 acres of grass. I have no idea how much acrage there is company wide, as there are several hundred pig farms with varying acrage, and expansion into beef production is presently underway.

Andybob: I have read all of Wilbur Smith's books and several of them were set in Rhodesia, very interesting. Did the government pay you guys for your land or just run you out because you weren't "Native" even though you were born there? :)

Agriculture was the major mainstay of the economy untill the socialist government siezed commercial and family farms in 2002, often violently, and handed them over to inexperienced party supporters.

I'm sorry to hear you were affected by that Andybob. I'm sure it's a safe bet you're not a member of the Robert Mugabe fan club.

Are you going to go back to Zimbabwe now that they are starting to give some farms back to the white Farmers that were tossed off their land? Guess them poor natives could not make anything grow huh?

Never supported any of the militant nationalists, I saw too much in the way of atrocities as a soldier during the civil war.
I grew up amongst the Matabele people in the south, many were massacared after the Mugabe regime tookpower, many old friends dissapeared.
There are many qualified. competant African commercial farmers running their own farms, some of these were also targeted if it was believed they supported opposition political parties. The early distribution of suitable commercial farms as co-operatives with assistance from neighbouring commercial farmers. Many trainig and assistance schemes have existed for decades, the Tuli breeding program was origionally to supply cattle free to the tribespeople, that could produce commercially acceptable cattle that can thrive under the poor management and nutrition found in the tribal reserves.
The farm workers who at least could run the farm routines, were also forced off the farms,so the people "dumped" on the farms stripped and sold Buildings, irrigation equipment, machinery etc, leaving the farms unworkable.
I cannot go back as they are targeting ex specialforce soldiers, and anyway,I still wouln't trust the present 'Muppet Show' that passes as a government.

What kind of fencing is needed to contain those critters?

How do they fare with coyotes?

Would it be possible to run a few with cattle?
