This study is interesting in that it claims that root depth in mixed cover crops is more uniform and thin.

 
What we do not know is if the mixed cover retained more of the nutrients more at the surface. That was the point beyond erosion control.


The short answer to that is yes. Walnut Creek Seeds (Dave Brandt (RIP)) has all sorts of videos and information on cover crops. I was fortunate enough to live relatively close and have visited the farm several times to observe the utilization of cover crops and their research first hand.
