These forums get hit regualrly by spammers, some porn some drug, some just junk. Another cattle forum was shut down completely becasue of the inabaility to control spammers. Maybe it's time to think about having new members approved before allowing them to post. I don;t like the idea, but even though Macon is doing a yoemans job of keeping the boards clean there doesn;t seem to be any other way to keep the junk off of here.
Just ranting out loud
Of course the conspiricy theorists will claim that it wil be used to prevent other views, but I don;t think so.

Dun,

Was the particular board shut down by the board's owner because spammers just took over, or was it shut down by whatever internet entity that offered it?

Just thinking about it, most of these spammers have such obvious "spammish" type names...might not hurt for the Mods and Macon to approve them. The board I used to manage had to write a reason why whomever wanted to join...didn't have to be more than 2 words...just something that let the manager and mods know they knew what the board was about.

These spammers are on some sort of program that hits message boards, having to write a word or 2 probably isn't even an option within their nasty little spamming program. And, if they've not written in anything, then Macon and the mods can automatically bounce them.

You may have hit on something here, Dun.

The owner of the borads whos also is the host took them off line. The were getting hit with 50-100 spams a day. They had tried to leave it an open forum like this one used to be so that folks didn;t have to log in and it was just a sideline for their actual business.
It used to be the most active ofthe cattle forums but after having been off-line or a while they lost a lot of posters. Now with the spam problem and going off-line again my person fear is that they may be gone for good (which would be bad).

Alice the spammers just took over. I didn't count them but seemed to be in the hundreds a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks Macon for the job you do.

The sad part is that I contacted Penny and she went in and cleaned all the spam off of the boards. That evening when I went back in they were once again saturated with it.

Our home board (horsegazette.com) went to this style format a little less then two years ago because of spam. On the old board three of us couldn't keep the crap deleted. We got targeted by some of those robot systems that were entering the same message sometime a hundred times an hour. Some of it was real filth. When we went to this format the webmaster created some kind of program that so far has kept the spammers about 99% out. I think it may be keyword based but I'm not sure. Slim our webmaster is kind of King of the Nerds and there is no telling what his evil little brain has concocted.Z

i used to belong to a tractor forum very much like this one that was getting hit with spam at a very high rate, the admistrator asked what we (members)thought about a modest charge to belong it passed overwhelmingly and basically killed all the spam!
you could read posts and everything but you could not post unless you were a paid up member.
if i recall it was $10.00.
just a thought

I'd pay it quick to not be bothered with spam. Good idea!

Let us not offer to pay a fee if the solution is only a registration.

Does spam really sell anything? Why would I order Viagra from any spammer who sneaks onto this site when I could get it easily enough otherwise. (If I even needed it, of course) Are there really people who reply to those Nigerian widows?

I was born in the dark, but it wasn't last night.

Wow,
I was just looking at the member list. It's around 135 pages long. at ten bucks a head the board could do pretty well. Around $40,500 a year. we could have a heck of a year end cook out.

I reckon if it was a paid membership, that the member list would head south much faster than it headed north.

Cant remember when I joined but do you have to type in the letters that are all funny looking and disfigured? I think this also helps the Robot spammers from hitting you.

Maybe that would work or being approved or maybe a 24 hour waiting period were you can not post until you been a member for a day or two.

Or we can all just pay up a few bucks, I would pay but membership would go down fast I would bet. Not sure if Macon gets any revenue off of the amount of traffic he does if this is the case he might not want to charge.

WHOOOOOOOOOO Y'all

Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Shoot, I don't think spam is bad at all on the page. Now if Macon was complaining and asking for some sort of fix I may consider some suggestions. But until Macon ask for lets just leave well enough alone.

IT WORKS. LEAVE IT ALONE.

Macon has put in a fix that hopefully will help.
Persoanly I like spam too, but fried and in a sandwich or with eggs.
