I know that not many people use Markey bulls. If any of you all have use this type of bull and have any info about them. Please pass it on George

Hi
I tried to post a reply to chuckie last night But I guess it did not go through. A Marky is a Marchigiana. They are a kind of rare. A.J. post is good to see what they look like. I first saw one about 15 years ago. They don't have the long legs like a chianina. George

Grandpa used them on Angus based cows back in the late 70's. Made good cows but really big and a little ornery. I think he only tried them for a year or two and quit.

I have a Marchigiana X Angus cross calf. Brought him home from work. They bred 10 to a Markey bull. Those bred cows calved back in the fall calving group (Aug-Sept) Of the 10 that were bred, if I remember correctly 1 or 2 had twins. They were all an interesting shade of reddish/brown at birth. A couple looked like mine, sort of a brindle. The calves all had heavier birthweights than the straight Angus. 1 had difficulty (LARGE calf), born somewhat of a dummy-calf----the one they sent home with me as a week old. All the Markey calves could be spotted "a mile away" amongst the straight black Angus calves not just by color but by size. They were considerably larger than their peers. They have larger frames, are a bit taller and more muscle than their straight Angus peers.

The calf I brought home has grown like a weed and is a bit more rambunctious than any other bottle-calf I've raised.

I'm not sure which bull or bulls they used. I do know they did an internet search for any/all breeders in the US and had the Select Sires rep acquire the semen that they wanted.

Hi
Thanks so much for the info. I,m learning a lot I,m going to use this bull on SimmxLimo cows. They are about 5 years and up. These cows are black. I have had good luck with this Simmx Limo cross. They are larger than my Angus. I talk to a lady in Tenn. that is breeding PB Simm to a Marky She said her avg weening weight came up 57 lbs. My bull is 12 months now. I don't plan to use him until May 20.

Aren't you afraid they might be getting too big? I don't know what yor feeding/market situation is but man I'd thnk they'd be pretty large.

This post is for Workinonit. How is your Marky x Angus calf doing now. How about the other calves that you were talking about. Thanks for any reply George

He's doing well. Still growing like a weed and has an appetite to match  .

The ones where I work are still larger than their straight Angus counterparts of the same age. Their color is starting to be a more darker brown almost black. Very growthy calves.

Thanks Katherine Good Luck

Thank you.

Not sure if I'll keep mine for the freezer or sell him. The ones they have where I work, the plans are to sell all but one. The one they will have butchered to see how he compares to the straight Angus calves.
