Has anyone ever thought about doing raffles of a whole beef or sides of beef processed in any way the winner chooses.
Selling raffle tickets from anywhere from 10bucks to 20bucks each ticket. lets say 250-500 tickets

Your state me be different, but it is a big ordeal here even for a youth organization (nonprofit) to have a raffle. I doubt that an individual could even have one. If just an individual can start gameing in your state, there are far more profitable avenues to pursue.

here there's tons of Raffles there's shooting clubs and hunting clubs that do them all year round... turkey shoots too.

I think BF is right on this one... you better look into this a little deeper Sky. I know a gentleman who was thinking of doing something similar with his farm. Selling raffle tickets for like $500.00 each... He was shut down rather quickly.

That ended that pretty quickly as profitable organizations are not allowed to do raffles.
Turkey shoots are ok here long as you have a special permit... Hmm....

§ 18.2-340.26
Sale of raffle tickets; drawings.


A. Except as provided in subsection B, a qualified organization may sell raffle tickets both in and out of the jurisdiction designated in its permit and shall conduct the drawing within the Commonwealth.


B. A qualified organization may sell raffle tickets for a raffle drawing which will be held outside the Commonwealth, provided the raffle is conducted in accordance with (i) the regulations of the Board and (ii) the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which the raffle drawing will be held.


C. Before a prize drawing, each stub or other detachable section of each ticket sold or won through some other authorized charitable game conducted by the same organization holding the raffle, shall be placed into a receptacle from which the winning tickets are drawn. The receptacle shall be designed so that each ticket placed in it has an equal chance of being drawn.

I know you can "give" away something and only charge an application fee. There was a family that sold their farm like that around here a while back. Charged like a $500 application fee and everyone had to write an essay as to why they deserved the farm.

That is smart and I am sure if you word it like that it would be able to be done.

Can't do it hear either. Don't know if anyone would actually enforce it. But I'm sure if I was the one selling they would. Never really understood the harm. Except that the parties interested in collecting taxes can't collect. Kinda like moonshining.

Sky, run an add for antibiotic free grain or grass fed beef in the Richmond and Petersburg paper for 1 week. In the add say the live beef will be delivered to the nearest slaughterhouse for whatever price you decide you want, live weight. That bypasses all the issues u worry about. And I bet you will have more orders than you can fill. I have a guy here, 400 miles from you that delivers 8-10 beef a year to the Richmond area. They are slaughtered here.

I will try that in the spring when I have a few close to killing weight and I'll let you know how it goes. good idea

Our local Hereford group does it every year, for the last 30+ years, Sky. $500 or the equivalent value of meat. Used to be 1/2 side of beef but that ended when we spent over $700 on a side - number of years ago.

We get 1000 tickets made and sell them for 2-3 months before the draw. $2 ticket or 3 for $5. Pretty much always sell 3/4 of the tickets, and sell them all on good years. Winners that are young and from the city are the only ones that take the beef, older and rural people take the cash.

Nice here seems it wont fly if big ol govt cant get there hands on a cut of the money. I am going to try K.T.way and see what shakes loose.

Those are non-profit or charitable organizations, Sky. In my state, I wouldn't be able to do a raffle or any "game of chance" as an individual, for profit, which is what you'd be doing. The 4-H kids hold a raffle every year at fair time for beef and pork, but that's non-profit. Turkey shoots would be different -- that's a competition, like paying entry fees for a bicycle race or roping event.

No the shooting clubs and hunt club raffles ARE for profit around here they use that money to help rent land but I guess that's why they don't really publicly announce the raffle its more of a buy a slip from someone in that club kind of thing. They raffle off guns and trucks sometimes. But I know what you are saying and that's what the law is here too.. Very true on the competition and Turkey shoot.

We have been paying people with food, instead of cash.

Our post pounder needed some welding, the bill was a couple hundred dollars, we paid with a couple chickens, some beef, pork, and eggs.

Once people eat real food, they come back and buy it next round.

Would seem hard to keep up with costs and records for IRS on bartering expenses. Do you show food traded at your cost or retail prices?
