Lucid Dream

Many of you will recall that Sky and I are half-brothers born of the same Lakota mother in the great State of Montana. Yesterday, I called Sky and said, “Brother, I am in desperate need of the Great Spirit. Please come as soon as you can.” He arrived late last night. We loaded the utility vehicle and headed for the back 30. I packed some pork ribs and a bottle of fire water to help us get into the spirit.

We built a large bonfire. Sky took off all but his loin cloth and began a sacred dance around the fire. I heard a coyote calling in the distance as if in answer to his mournful chants. This went on for hours. I drank the good Kentucky bourbon that seemed to chase away the awful hurt that was upon me. Sky became weary and sat down next to the fire and drank the remainder of our bourbon. As soon as he fell asleep, the Great Spirit appeared, dancing above the tall flames. The Great Spirit looked down upon me. I cowered before him. In a clear voice he intoned, “Ron of the Dream On calf, fear not. When I return to your ancestors, a virtual image will appear above the flames. Capture it on your device. This is the image of how Lucid Dream will appear when he has grown. He has the Spirit of his ancestors and the Dream On legacy is upon him. DO NOT remove his nuts. To do so would be sacrilege and I will visit upon you and your cattle a pestilence to last a thousand years.”

A virtual image rose above the flames and I captured it on my cell phone. Below is that image.

I stayed out of this from the start, cause I really didnt care. But since i like to make my opinion known - his head's too big and his bodies too little at the very basic level.

Problem with pedigree animals, and more so the owners of these animals is that since they (we) have time and energy invested in them, we want them to be better than they sometimes are. Because the matings and numbers say they should be, and we waited so long for them to arrive. Everything moves at such a fast pace these days we want genetics to do the same. And although we have tools at our disposal breeders never before had, its still a chess game, and calculated, heavily scrutinized moves, over the long term wins the race.

Best game plan is to think longer term. When you're old and grey - even more so than some are now, You should want for anyone to show up and be like 'wow, you've been doing it right'. Whether you're leaving them to a child, or selling the lot of them out into the world, you're name and vision should be much larger than one calf ever will be. Allowing even small 'what could be's' to cloud your focus won't get you results any faster. You don't want people saying 'the cattle had really good numbers, but didn't look great at all'

If two people start out with 5 cows and then 20 yrs later guy1 has 20 great cows generating 50,000 a year, and guy2 has 100 run of the mill cows, also generating 50,000 - whos the better cattleman?

...obviously guy 2 cause he's the bigger operator. :?
