Low Pee Production Problem ?

Lots of land coming on the market here due to commodity prices. I soil tested two properties and was amazed by P values from 9 to 15. Obviously, they have been mined out over the years. Any inexpensive way to deal with this deficient?
 
Nope. Just adjust purchase price accordingly. I will never pay big dollar for neglected land. Next door neighbor just sold his place two weeks ago, and he did quite well, considering how much work it needs - completely mined out, no fertilizer for over 10 years.
 
Any chicken litter available up there? It's really high in P and works good here for about 3 years, then the P level gets to high in the soil.
 
Depending on your soil type which will be based on chemical and physical properties, some soils have a lot of insoluble (unavailable) P due to low pH. As pH increases, our soils release natural P but that is just here. Check with extension, NRCS or some knowledgeable farmer to see if this is your situation. Ag lime might be a better investment than litter but litter that has not been treated with PEL or alum will have a whale of a lot of available P. Treated litter will have much less and the bonding of P to the alum is permanent. So, not all litter is alike.

And do not spread litter and lime at the same time. There is binding up of elements between them too when they are on the surface and are yet to get tied into the soil particles.
 
Another time when I was completely wrong about the subject of the discussion after reading the title. Here I was wondering how you had monitored the animal's urine in the first place to even know it was low.

I didn't know their was any place left that was priced by productivity, with all the investors , recreational and hunters buying land.

There is some un wooded and not eligible for CRP property out there. Move North young man!

An outside "investor" bought a farm 3 miles from me. Put up HUGE Ranch LLC signs and No Trespass signs. But, he could not rent it so it became pheasant pasture. Now it is back on the market for a loss.

Never heard of it around here either. Not even row crop land.
 
I believe in liming to increase availability. Neglected land here often needs 3 to 6 tons per acre.
We have turkey litter here but the price has gone way up. There is not a cost advantage unless you can precision apply. I need to check into this.
I don't have manure available so it sounds like I need to price out some chemical P.
I am hoping there would also be some tips on how to improve the nutrient cycling or use green manure crops or ?
 
Farm the place properly and add fertiliser. It'll come up.

Big difference in price between land here, according to productivity and potential land use. But having said that, the organic farm I leased a few years back sold according to the production I'd done off it the first year I was there - ie, the same as any other dairy farm in the area - even though it was in this condition, with extreme low P from decades of organic sheep farming with no fertiliser.

I hope one day to have the opportunity to buy a farm whose price has been destroyed that way.

Can not be as bad as silage corn with no fertilizer
Amazing that people will pay the high price for seed corn and then not try to get maximum production from it.
 
I think P and K application economies are different for grazers. As long as you don't have a woods for them to lie up in--most gets recycled onto the pasture.
I am thinking about a multi year plan to get P values up over 25 ppm.
How much P per acre would you be comfortable putting on in one year?
 
The majority of the P used by grasses is utilized in root growth so very little is actually removed from the soil. Three tons of grass only removes about 12 pounds of P. And in a pasture situation the majority of that would get recycled back to the soil. We never recommend additional P if the soil tests is above 30 ppm. It isn't very hard to get and keep P levels at the right level. The N level is more difficult because it is so volatile and the importance of K often time is over looked.
 
There are in most soils vast reserves of nutrients that are unavailable, but by improving the soil life they can become available. Applying compost (as opposed to straight manure) can increase soil life and start the natural cycles.

After a forest fire, nutrients in the soil are very low. Within two years they will be back to their normal levels. This would be without the addition of any form of fertiliser.
