Long horn butchering.

The vet I got him

the vets sales pitch did say for the price I am asking u can use him to breed you 3 animals and castrate him. Yep he was lacking grocery's or something. I wanted horns gone and fig that was the way to get calves I could AI and eventually ET if I didn't eat or sell. Bull has been eating really good and putting on lots of weight since I posed the pic. He is still smaller than what I would like for him to genetically pass on but maybe he will get there. Here is a today pics. Thoughts. I am not here to have prises I am here to learn. Calves should be born in wrong time of year. Not how I'm going to fix the cycles of spring calves unless the bull leaves.
Hard to give good advice I guess without seeing your operation. This is just an opinion but to me it looks like he still isn't getting enough to eat. That hollow triangle between the last rib and hip should be full if the rumen is full. Not sure if you could post a pic of the pasture he is grazing or what exactly he has access to eat. Glad you didn't just run off. Probably forgot if you already said what the goals of your operation are. The genetics will play a role in how easily the cattle will gain weight and marble so if your wanting to butcher the calves keep that in mind. Really odd "sales pitch" from the vet. Something still seems really wrong. If you have time start doing a lot of research on your own. Reading, YouTube videos, etc… maybe find some successful operators in your area to bounce ideas off of and get advice from. Some people in this industry will give you a hard time or take advantage of you but there are also a lot of really good people out there if you can find them.

I really don't have an operation. I have 3 LH heifers. My pastures are not good this year. They eat them down quick and they are hilly and rocky. I fed my last bale of hay 30 days ago. There are 6 acres of say. I fertilized a year and half ago for hay and it worked good except my guy would come back and do sex cutting. I get avg 20-25 5x5 off it. It is lacking lime. I have not been able to get anyone to put lime on it but after I get it mowed and rolled I will start back to trying. My goals are not to grow. I don't have space. I want something good to eat that don't cost me money. I will sell off excess animals or family eat them. My goal is to replace everything I have animal wise with calves from what I have to get LH genetics gone and AI from there or et after a few proven mothers. Try for pics of things today

They will eat fine for your family. Just keep not having full beef genetics in mind for what it will take to finish them and then marbling. Maybe buy in your hay that way your adding nutrients to your farm without having to buy lime and fertilizer. With that many animals it wouldn't take to many bales to get them through the winter and then you could rotational graze your pasture so that they have more pasture to eat. Could stockpile some pasture for winter grazing if you weren't haying it. If your going through 20-25 bales a year might be because you don't have enough pasture.

I know you probably have told me where you are in SW Virginia but i have forgotten. If your anywhere west of Abingdon i can get lime hauled and spread for you. Anywhere else ask your county extension agent who spreads lime.

Thank you. What are they charging? No kidding are you from abbington area? What do you raise? I'm sure that u have said but I have CRS.
You have Cytokine Release Syndrome? What has that to do with anything?

It's so weird when people use acronyms and expect other people to know what they mean... I looked up CRS and got Cytokine Release Syndrome which I'm pretty sure isn't what you meant.

Can't Remember Stuff. It's actually pretty untechnical, but afflicts a considerable number of us. 🙂

CRS. Can't remember stuff syndrome.

The meat actually turned out better than that I expected by far. It does have marbling in the ribeyes definitely not prime, but maybe close to choise. Yellow marbling, of course had to add fat to the burger. It's sold out in one day and I had people mad because they didn't get any. I really didn't make money, but I'm eating for free.
