Hey guys,

What are ya'll thoughts on LA 300, as it is a broad spectrum antibiotic?

The combo we use for doctoring cattle right now is either Excede/Resflor or Draxxin KP/Baytrill. Had successes with both combos, some failures.

Wondering if LA 300 with something else might be a good combo? Of course nothing is perfect, we'll always lose some cows

LA 300 is for soft muscle issues. Crack heal and pinkeye for sure. Not for respiratory issues at all.

Why are you having sick cows? Addressing that issue is where you should start.

Get your vet involved is a program for immunization as soon as they are unloaded. I dont buy as many as you do but i buy a couple hundred a year.
The moment they are unloaded, day or night, they go down the chute and get Inforce 3, Presponse, wormed with injectable Cydectin, Alpha 7, Ultra Sabre, ear tagged, Ralgro, and castrated if needed. Put out in the lot with water and good hay only.
My pull for sickness is maybe 1 in 50. If acting off at all they get a shot of Excede or Generic Draxxin. Normally a 100cc bottle will get outdated before its all used.

LA 300 does treat some strands associated with BRD. But of course treats plenty of other things too.

Just trying to see whether folks have a preference for it

I disagree with using it for BRD. Not saying it cant help but other antibiotics are so much better.

Welcome to the world of stocker cattle. BRD is any stocker operations' biggest problem.

Will definitely look into your combo. We run them through chute too when they get unloaded from 18 wheelers. We give them Draxxin KP/Excede along with wormer, tetanus and One Shot. One would imagine them not getting sick so much as Draxxin is pretty much the strongest antibiotic out there but they sure do. Pulled some today a week after getting all their shots, work with Resflor from there. Even tried not castrating them so early on and let them gain some weight and get healthy but does not always work. There's a big group of healthy boys out there seemingly bullet proof, just always those couple of steers that get sick that we're trying to get healthy

Yes for sure!! I wouldn't use it for main BRD treatment either. Just curiosity

I’ll second what Kenny said about LA 300. We use LA 300 for pinkeye, foot rot, and other more minor infections. I would not rely on it at all for respiratory illness.
Most respiratory diseases are severe and can be fatal if not treated with an adequate medication. It’s nothing to take lightly and treatment with a proper medicine in a timely fashion are more often than not the key to saving the animal.

Some differences might also be that i don't buy any tender young calves. My 350 to 425lb calves would grade as #2 with a few #3. Many are weaned or so close to it they dont stress much. They get turned out in a bigger lot in 3 to 5 days. A couple weeks later they are with the bigger group. 10 days seems to be getting them over the hump.

Yes that might be Kenny.

Which usually when we turn the cattle out into pastures, they'll look good for about 2-3 weeks. Then after that is when the work starts. Appreciate your insight on LA300, we've used it some too for pink eye, but won't be incorporating it into our main treatments

And with the overuse of the stronger antibiotics by many producers, in a few years the Draxxin/equivalent won't do much anymore either. Ha

We had a pasteurella mannheimia outbreak a few years ago right before we were going to wean. Started treating with Draxxin and pour on banamine. About a third of them did not respond by day 3 and still had fevers. Our vet treated with his "feedlot special" which was to IV them with LA200 plus liquid sulfa. Everything cleared up after that. Was a miserable week and we had to wait another two weeks to wean to minimize stress.

I’ve always been told there’s a knack to giving LA200 IV. Go to fast and you kill them. LA100 is supposed to be IV’d.

Sometimes the old drugs still have a place.

Effectiveness of antibiotics is interesting, because some calves will improve without any treatment, but the drug companies do not share that data...

We now pull much sooner, mostly based on (lack of) fill, and use much less antibiotics and more stockmanship.

Our typical buy is a comingled 375# unweaned calf.
