No argument about cows going after it...mine do as well. This is a pasture that has quite a bit of Johnson Grass in it. Cows make a round on it just about every day. A long way from being "killed" out by grazing. It's actually getting thicker each year. They also hit the KR Bluestem like that.

But I don't see heavy grazing killing it out.

Here is a pasture that had very little in it several years ago. Pretty much had cows on it continuously till this year. Pulled them off in May. Low stocking rate and plenty of rain this Spring let me hold it in reserve. Figured I'd be on it sometime in July but that didn't happen. Guess I should have had it baled but I don't need the hay either. Still not on it and it looks like this today. IMG_0064 - Copy.JPGIMG_1133.JPG
This is a field I used to plant oats on for winter grazing. Almost had it "eradicated" 12 years ago trying to keep the bermuda in check. Now that I want it, the Bermuda is taking it's sweet time establishing. The Johnson grass is drought stressed so won't be turning on anytime soon.

Kenny, I was using Round-up. Silly me was trying to get rid of the Bermuda in my oats at the time.
 
Sounds like you may be understocked for the amount of good forage you have. Mine always preferred JG over anything else and ate it down to the ground before hitting the Bahia or coastal. Your's is not an altogether undesirable problem..if it weren't a drought year. Woulda made some good hay.

Yes…now it is called Cryder (same stuff, different name)…I use the recommended 1 oz. per acre with good results. Panoramic 2SL is also supposed to work on several generally undesirable grasses but is tricky as you don't want to use it until the Bermuda has completely greened up…it also gets crabgrass & Bahia…the Cryder (or Outrider) is easier to use just doesn't kill as broad a spectrum. Additionally, the Panoramic shouldn't be used in the heat of summer. If all you're really after is the Johnson grass, Cryder would be your best bet. On the upside, Panoramic 2SL doesn't require a license here in Texas. I've got some to use late next spring or early summer on some crabgrass that has shown up in a hay pasture…timing can be tricky, though. Been using Cryder (Outrider) for several years with very good results on Johnson grass.

I generally hit my coastal Bermuda pastures with Grazon P+D and Cryder…pleased with results…the Grazon gets to broadleaf weeds and Cryder gets the Johnson grass…takes some time (a week or two) to see the effect on the Johnson grass. And ditto on what some have said about the seed bank. If it goes to seed, they can lay dormant for a number of years…just have to watch for it and spray accordingly. Usually, my spring time spraying does the trick but once in a while, I have to spot treat later in the summer if some of it sprouts later. Hitting it when it is relatively small gets the best results but the Cryder will kill the "adult" plants, too.

You might have said something about that in the past. It is a little tricky up here where we are. It's typically frowned upon here. You are right though, and I'd like for other locals to hear the positives you speak of. I just hear all the negatives. It was sorta favored 2 years ago when we got hit with the historic D4 drought.

Wickbar with Roundup full strength. I think in a lot of areas they call it a weed wiper. I use it when the JG is about a foot taller than the Bermuda. If it ever quits raining I am going to use it on a formerly great Bermuda field that I let someone else rent last year. I have waged a 50 year war on JG and crabgrass in my Bermuda horse-hay fields.
