I found a John Deere 400 grinder locally for sale @ $1250. I haven't gone and looked at it yet, of course the ad says good working condition. I don't have experience with these grinders but am wanting one to grind ear corn. Is this a good grinder? What size tractor HP do I need to run it?

I used to have one and they are good pieces of equipment. Not much to go wrong with them either but when you are looking at it look closely at the bottom of the tank in the cone area and look for rust. Lots of people would add salt to the mix to limit feed the livestock and this is the area where it can rust out. It's not impossible to fix but its sortof difficult given the area you need to weld and the thickness of the metal and the cone shape. Other than that, barring a bearing here and there they are good solid pieces. Since I needed two tractors to do what I was doing I used a Ford 3000 to run the mill and it was plenty big enough.
