A friend is looking at JD 456 round baler. I looked at it. It seems be in great shape, and well taken care of. It seems to be a good deal compared to the asking prices and condition of the ones I see online. I did a search and it seems like folks on here like them. My question - is there any common problems with them he should look into if he buys it? Stuff that may not be common problems for all balers?

From my understanding they were super reliable. 30k to 50k bale machines with good preventative maintenance. If it runs out well and makes no off sounds, and hydraulics work well. I'd jump on it.

Got a neighbor with a 456 and it makes some very nice bales.

I'd try to take a bale to unroll and then reroll if the seller would oblige. Might be ridiculous. Lol. I don't know.

I think he already committed to buying, maybe already has it. I haven't talked to him since we went to look at it. The guy selling it got it from the owner with some other equipment when that guy sold out. The seller has a mchale, makes quite a bit of hay, wraps a lot. He just doesn't have need for this one he said. He offered to hook it to tractor and run it, but I don't know if they did that or not. It looked to be in good shape. The sheet metal didn't have dents or scratches. The paint is 20 years old so it's lost it's shine but you could tell it was stored inside. Had all the manuals, harness, monitor.
