Is it to early to fertilize

Help Support CattleToday:

It depends on location and what type of grass. Here in East Texas, bermuda has greened up but will not actively grow until our night time temperatures stay at 58 or warmer. It was 45 here for an overnight low.

Is it to early to fertilize pastures?
Generally no, but it depends on if the area fertilized is subjected to runoff.
Neighbor has a pasture that the river floods in the spring about 3 out of every 5 years.
He blames the popularity of pattern tiling by row crop farmers as being 1/2 the problem.

IDK if grass tetany can be a problem where you are. It can be here in Ohio in the spring. Fertilizing (with nitrogen anyways, or a fertilizer mix that has nitrogen) will increase the liklihood of grass tetany when grass is at the peak of its rapid spring growth. Although, based on the rate of growth everywhere this year in the spring, I would put that risk as unsarcastically low. So, if there is an upside to this slow spring growth, this might be it. 😏
