Input on a possible trade

I listed six cattle for sale and got offered a small trailer which is a tempting trade. Even though we only need one a few times a year, I hate not having our own. We have to hire or rent and although it saves us registration and maintenance it's a real pain.

Question is, do you know anything about this one? It looks lightweight, maybe too lightweight? Like I said, we'll only use it for cattle a few times a year, probably 1-4 head per load.

1996 WW 14' with divider panel and escape door. New tires, everything works. Minor dings in front from a pony? No rust or repairs.

The cattle I'm offering are: 5 yr SH cow with calf at side, 2 yr SH heifer, 14 mo RA heifer, 7 mo RA/Herf heifer, 7 mo RA/LimHerf heifer. All are current on vaccs and worming. Some have papers. The cow is thin from nursing, the others are BCS 5. All are healthy. I'm preg checking this week, but all should be open.

The offer is a partial trade plus some cash to me. Any thoughts?

Of course I haven't seen your cattle so I don't know about that side of the deal, but WW makes an excellent trailer. You want to check around the edges close to the floor and underneath for rusting out. A trailer can look good but its only as good as that floor.

Yes, he has the trailer listed at $2,750 and I was thinking it's probably a $2,500 trailer. He's offering $500 cash on top of that.

Probably a pretty good deal but I try to never pay what someone asks for something. You jump on it too quickly they think they priced it too cheap....Make them come down just a little bit...that way when they leave they leave knowing they made the best deal they could possibly make.

I've owned two of those 14' trailers at different times in my life and currently have a 16' version. WW does makes a great trailer, but check it over really good.

I would jump on that like a big dog. W-W makes great trailers. In the past I've owned a number of 16 foot W-Ws now I have a 14 foot Kodiak. For gettign into tight areas that missing 2 foot is really handy.

I would NOT make the trade. Sell the cattle at the best market you have and buy the trailer in a separate transaction. I think your cattle may be worth more than that trailer. A small cattle trailer at that age is selling poorly, at least based on the transactions I have observed around here. Cattle are near record highs. I am not a master of the market, but...

That's the approach I'd go with. If you think the trailer would fit your need and you could get it right, you could use it to haul the cattle to market. There again, I have two sale barns within 35 miles of the place and don't know your situation in that regard.

id make the trade if i was you.he is right on the money with a trailer like that.that trailer new is over $4000.if the floor is good id go for it.

I'm paying $1,200-$1,900 for good pairs and I'd snap up a breed-able shorthorn or RA for eight or nine hundred real quick... That still leaves you with two calves to spare at somewhere in the vacinity of $1.30lb... Haul them to the sale. :nod: You can pay cash for the trailer and have some left.

Where in CA are you located?

How wide is the trailer?

A new one will cost in the 3800 range. Check under the trailer if the under carriage needs work then the price drops drastically. I would only be willing to give 1800 for it. Also if I were in the market for a trailer I would get a 16 foot goose neck because it will pull better and sell better.

Thank you for the feedback and advice. I am wondering if w might be able to get more for them than the $3,250 we're essentially being offered in the trade. Maybe not though because you haven't seen them yet. Here they are. If they were our best we wouldn't be selling them. None have hidden problems though. They're just the ones that didn't make the cut this year.

Same cow as above, looking poor after nursing a calf through summer. I prefer a cow to keep more condition.

Full sister to the calf in the first photo, 22 mos old

Red angus heifer, 14 months old. Fat as a toad on poor grass only. I should maybe preg check her, but she has never been with a bull and her mom is exactly the same.

Red angus x Hereford heifer, 7 months old. Full sister to a different one I posted that some people seemed to like. No eye pigment on this one.

3 way cross Red angus x LimHerf heifer, 7 months old out of a first calf heifer

ETA: CP, we are east of Fresno. Just got some rain and cool weather to settle the dust, but next week is supposed to get warm again.

I bought my WW 16' x5' wide, double axle bumper pull new. I think I paid 2400 including spare wheel. It was a nice trailer but the sheet metal was very thin. The trailer pulled real well empty, loaded it fish tailed all over the road when the stock moved around. If it were me, I would sell my cattle and buy a heavier built trailer, good luck.

Hi Tom, thanks for that. I know photos aren't the best judge, but the metal does look a little thin. A pony or mini-horse put some dings in it. I don't mind dings and such, but I imagine full sized cows will do a lot more than a pony. I'm looking at other offers and could also take them to the sale, prices are great. They wouldn't sell as a group though and broken up into ones and twos takes away from top dollar.

I agree with those that say sell the cattle then go buy the trailer. Just an opinion, you probably ain't gonna get killed either way.

If you take the deal you won't know how much you are leaving on the table. Sell em and buy a gn. You'll be better off.
