That, is not what I keep hearing either, and I've heard it right here too, ie that it is indeed part of the job and we all need to keep that in mind before any of us criticize the police.

But when criminals start to really get out of control, the general public will get behind the police and wipe the bad guys out. We can not survive without the police and laws. As long as there's cops trying to stop someone else, being shot at will happen. What's not part of the job is being hunted like deer. That's a game changer right there!

I think we'll be just like we are now when it gets out of control because there will still be a faction that's yelling for constitutional rights for the hunters when they don't give a flying flip about yours. (Guess that's no different than now, huh?)

Back in the late 80's our office used to sponsor a week long homicide seminar for officers from all over the country. One year we had a gang specialist out of Los Angeles speak on their growing problem. When presented with a question about how would one go about stopping the gangs his answer was "You'd have to kill them all and kill the ones taking their places". Not the most popular answer in the room at that moment, but 20 some-odd years later I get what he was saying.
 
They often give as much as they get, and they go into it knowing full well what the risks and downfalls are, so I have a hard time feeling much sympathy for them when they whine about what a thankless job they have, but with the recent events there are not many people who I would wish that job on. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would willingly go into that line of work in the first place.

Pretty obvious we won't have to ever worry about you pinning on a badge to serve and protect. Nobody is looking for sympathy you jerk !!!!!!

Well bless your heart you pleasant fellow. No, you will not find me volunteering for that job. Yes I have seen a fair number who bemoan the circumstances they willingly entered into, but no matter, I realize that they are facing a period of general low moral in their profession, caused in a large part by a bunch of dirtbags and those without the sense that an earthworm evolved with.
 
I was at a gathering last night that included around twenty deputy sheriffs and a couple of highway patrolmen. The subject came up and judging from the responses I heard there was not an ounce of backdown in any of them. One deputy pointed out that there are always people who would kill him just for being a cop if they thought they could get away with it so the only difference now is that they're saying it out loud.

I'm not hearing anything about backing down either and didn't expect to. What I am hearing is they'll sure look at a person walking up to their patrol unit a lot differently now.
 
A cop has no chance if someone with half a brain wants to kill them. Maybe the secret service should guard and protect them, they've done too good of a job protecting the potus.
