If you could do it all over again

Help Support CattleToday:

Call me crazy, but I would (and still concidering) custom bale hay. Don't know why, but I always enjoyed being in the hay field. Either that or open a sale barn.

Not really just wanted to say it before crowder did.

If I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing. But if I was going to start a small business, I'd like to open a store that directly markets meat and vegetables from local sources to the consumer. Stores here used to do that. They would kill the cow on site and butcher it. Stores would also buy vegetables from locals out the back door. People took pride in what they grew and got to show off a little with their produce and meat. Now you don't know who or what has had its hands on what you eat. I think it would be a win/win deal for everyone except the trucker.

Okay so seeing the age difference between me and most of you guys here, instead of if I could do it all over again, my answer is what I want to do the first time round.

Assuming no inhibitions or barriers ... there are several small businesses I would like to begin.

I would love to start a stud cattle preparation service ... but with the drought and feed prices the way they are this is not a smart thing to be doing right now.

I've always been interested in farming meat rabbits intensively ... but with the drought and feed and oil prices the way they are, I think the trend is going to shift largely away fom intensive farming to forage based production of protein.

What I'd really like to do is start a business which rears capretto (goat version of veal) and supplies to our local restaurants and hotels.

Another thing I'd like to do is become an ag teacher ... I am so passionate about agriculture I want to share it, and I understand the amazing influence a teacher can have on a student ... bad or good ... because if not for some of my teachers in high school I probably wouldnt be here doing what I am doing today. And I love teaching kids how to manage and handle livestock.

If I could do it all over again, I probably would have gone to vocational nursing school instead of going to university. I don't have the desire to go back to school now, but it would have been a good career and I could have retired by now if I wanted and started another profession.

BUT, having said that, it hasn't been a bad life and I am glad things have turned out they way they have. I am very blessed.

if i could back in time.id kept the dairy running an would never sellout.but the dairy is gone an i have to live with it.

Wouldn;t change a thing. All of the stuff I did is what made me the person I am today. I pretty well like me the way I am. (Nobody else does, but who cares?)

i would buy as much farm land that i could have back when i "just thought" it was high..oh and every 55 through 57 chevy that i could have bought for $150.00

I would keep the mineral rights to land I bought and sold  There was a dry hole drilled in '83 across the fence. That was way before the Barnett Shale boon.

20/20 hindsight would have been a lot of financial decision changes on investment. Mostly I would have bought way more Harley Davidson Stock back in '86. Whodathunkit?

I bought that Harley stock on a fluke. When I doubled my money is less than a year, I almost sold. I should have bought more right then! Nothing I have ever bought has done as well. Mostly I think it was timing.

I guess I titled it wrong. I mean regardless if your happy where you're at or not, if you had the opportunity to start a business what would it be. And yes I know you wouldn't change a thing.

A Feed Store I always wanted to own a feed store. There's a couple of things I would change, I would have told a couple of friends how much I thought of them before they died, and I mighta been a little nicer to the girls along the way. :cowboy:

By the way I like your new Avatar and what's funny is your Sig line is just as appropriate or maybe even more so than it was before.LOL

I wonder how many others say that, that have sold out?

I wonder how it is knowing it will be the last time the barn lights are on?

I'm sure at the time you sold out, you did it for all the right reasons.
