Hurricane Preparadness

Nope...I don't live in a coastal area...thank God!

But, as an "independent observer" here is my advice to all those continuing to live in all coastal areas:

During the "Off Season":

• 1. Buy and cut plywood to fit your windows. Have it ready to install.
  2. Buy and store empty gas/diesel cans ready to fill at "beginning of hurricane season".
  3. Buy and keep handy a chainsaw.
  4. Buy and keep handy a generator.
  5. Buy and keep handy several cases of bottled water.
  6. Have flashlights with batteries ready. Pick up extra batteries at "beginning of hurricane season".

A Caveat:

Those that live in those areas should already know that you will get a hurricane sooner or later. Don't be remiss in thinking you are above getting hit. Don't get into the panic buying situation for tools & equipment, etc., that the "other" people always seem to flock to the stores to buy because they didn't (or couldn't) think ahead. Don't want to spend the money in advance? No problem. Just join the rest of the panicked individuals storming the stores at the last minute...taking your chances something is still left in the stores.

Living in the hurricane prone areas? It is a conscious choice. The ocean can be good, bad, or ugly...

Don't think THIS one will be that bad? What part of "hurricane" don't you understand!

Yes we have Tornados in Texas! The difference is that Tornados are small in diameter, move fast (in seconds or minutes) and they are gone, doing major but spotty damage. Rarely over 1/2 mile wide. (Hurricanes and earthquakes are usually many (if not hundreds) of miles wide).

On the other hand, my sympathy goes out to those in harm's way. Be safe! Get the heck out of there if possible. Learn from the past...

One thing to remember is don't depend on the Government to take care of you. You need to be prepared and look out for your family.

Everyone in the path of the hurricane stay safe and take care, I have no idea of how one of those things are but if it is anything like the Tidal Wave (Tsunami) then I can relate to that. I did see the damage the Katrina left, hope this one is better than that...once again Take extra care....Chris.

No one has a clue until you have rode out a Hurricane. All regions of the country have there weather events and hazards that most of us don't have a clue of the dangers. The recent hurricanes couldn't even compare with Carla or Camile.

No thanks been there done that. My lariet is not big enough
No preparing for those things just bend over and kiss yer -ya no what good bye!

I rode out a couple of Typhoons in Asia. One in Taiwan and one in Hong Kong. T'was not a bit of fun. It is plain scary how dark it can get in the middle of the day. The rain and wind are relentless.

Hope all are safe..We even got a few people from the coast up here!! My daughter says she's not gonna try and make do without electricity..They have an apartment anyways..
I do prefer here,we get "gullywashers" tornados ,lightning,and sometimes strong winds,but the ground stays still and the ocean won't rise up and get me!

Didn't mean to ruffle no one's feathers Chief.
It's just anyone that's been living on the gulf or in Florida for the past five years that doesn't know what Hurricane supplies they need.

Must just be the Hurricane burn out, If the roofs not missing & all the fences tore down or water coming under the front door it just wouldn't be any fun here anymore. :lol:
