Was out looking at the calves and got some pics of our heifer calves

Looking at your calves I struggle to understand why you don't want to breed your own bulls, you certainly have the maternal genepool to work with, maybe not quite the bullpower at this stage. I would AI 10 or 20 of my best cows with a bull that is very strong through the shoulder and shoulder rib attachment area and keep a few for own use if I was you.

Calves look good. I think I like the 037 heifer better. I realize she is not as long but by the one pic of her I like her better. Things may change if I seen a video of her walking. The other one at the top is nice. Hard to tell with just a couple of pics. Keep both the 037 and the 007. how much youger is the 037 than the 007?

Can you get more pics of rear view of the them?

those are some fine looking calves.an yall are right she has the quality of cattle to raise herd bulls from.an AI is the best way to get started.or buy the best bull you can.an put him with 20 of your topend cows an go from there.

Good grief, and you are considering a bull you pictured on here a week or so ago. You really need to raise some of your own bulls and then sell at least one to the breeder of that bull calf and then he could take a step up.

I was second guessing myself on whether to keep 007 or not. She was born March 4.
From the rear 007, not the best she was scratching an itch.

037 is out of my Ribstone cow. She was born April 6.
011 on the left and 037 on the right

If we were going to keep back bulls for ourselves we would need some registered cows, like you said Harley, and AI them to different bulls. Have to watch the breeding. No brothers to sisters; sons to Mothers and that stuff.

Going to try to AI 3 cows to GH Rambo 279R this spring. 732 aka Whitey, 650 and 814 we got from Ace.
650 is the dam of this 020 heifer calf

If the cattle were registered back in the 1970's they never kept them up.
Had a full sister to 650, but she ate something that caused her to bloat and die before we got to her.
I had a registered cow I got from Feddes years ago, but due to the drought back in '01 I had to sell her. :cry2:

well personally i think you need to buy 4 or 5 reg cows or heifers.because you do know how to breed for cows that will produce the right kind of calves.an i think that would put you ahead of the game.i know you have friends that raise reg herefords.talk to them an see what they think.

why are you not using a black bull? I know why I dont but you may be dollars ahead to use one?I like the herfs just as much as the next guy but $ talks. If you dont want a black bull on the place then A-I most of the cows to a good black bull and run the herf as a cleanup.

As far as A-I and keeping a herd bull and running him with mom. I would just not keep any from mom. That makes it easy for you as long as it is tagged and gets sold to eat.

sorry to be off subject but why do you have rims on the bale unroller? Does it make it unroll better?

No black bull. We tried it once. Worked out ok the first year. 2nd year he spent more time at the fence bawling and trying to fight the herd bulls. That winter he got into a fight with either a steer or herd bull and busted a bunch of wooden planks in the corral.
tried to bluff me, but I had a pitchfork in hand and he ended up with a bloody nose. Hubby had to hit him once on top of his head with a steel fence post.
Last year kept him in with the heifers in the corral with hot wire running through it, for 45 days. Then he went to auction. Only got 3 calves out of him. All he did was bawl at the gate.

Yes last pic is of 020. You think 037 has TMW you should see the "skunk stripe" down her dams back. I know most guys would frown on her, but she has the best bag and mothering instinct in the whole herd.

Our bales are 4'x5' it helps to squeeze the bales better. The bale bed was made for 6'x6' bales.

Why the talk about needing registered cows. The calves we like are out of your commercial cows why possibly downgrade them with others just because they have papers?

Just for own use i agree there is no need for registered cows, they just need to be very good cows, for selling bulls as hereford bulls it's a different ballgame and ethics.
