heat detectors

Help Support CattleToday:

In descending order:

Bull
Gomer bull
Open heifer
An observent eye
Horney steer
K-mars or tail head paint for the difficult ones

dun

Dun and Mike hit the nail on the head.
But if you have to use something else, I like the Estrus Alert patches.
Too many trees around here to use the Kmars. They all come back broken.
The price is about the same.
Here is the site...

I know its not ideal, but when push comes to shove use a 3-4 month old bull calf. He won't miss many. The bull calf will not gain much during this period, will burn too much energy chasing in heat cows and will not eat as much as he would otherwise, but in an emergency when heat detection time is limited he may well be the solution.

It is best if the bull calf is familiar with the cows so he won't be scared of their bullying him

what is the best Heat Detectors?

Thanks
The Sidewinder short range air-to-air missile has excellent Heat Seeking capability and that coupled with a helmet mounted sight will give you about a 286 degree "field"-of-view of your pasture from your tractor! :D

If I'm paying for the straws I usually try to employ several of the above.

1) steer to catch the obvious
2) Kamar to confirm and catch overnight activity
3) keep 21 day chart to know who to look at
4) check am and pm

I will have to say my electronic HeatWatch system , Ive tried most everything mentioned above with not alot of sucess. It has not failed me a yet.
